no lights, no snow, and no moon

Just to give you another example of why you should use a light...
Last night I was fox hunting a cattle pasture in a large creek bottom using a mouse sqeaker and after 4-5 minutes of calling, a 2ft. barn owl flew in from behind me and landed on the fence post 8-10ft in front of me while the light was on. Talk about making your heart skip a beat. I've had screech owls fly in 3 & 4 together and sit in the trees around me and call back and forth but I've never had an owl this big in my face like that. I put the light on him and he wouldn't leave. Its a 250,000 candle power in his face that close and he didn't care. I threw my extra coat at the post in front of my light where the owl could see it and still couldn't scare him away. He was determined to have a mouse for supper. After 20 minutes of trying to scare him off {quitely, yea right}I finally walked up and all but touched it. He finally flew away but only went 15yds and landed on the ground looking at me. I was afraid to call anymore with the owl right in my face. I had to move about 500yds cause who knows where he may have landed the next time.
The point is that an owl can tear your face up bad and without the light, he just may have. Absoultly use a light! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i wish i could use a light but missouri does not allow it. i had an owl fly about 2 foot over the top of my head once in the daytime but the way i figure it an owl can see as good in the dark as i can in the day, also the light shining on the owl probally had something to do with it not knowing what you were (ever been pulled over and had a cop shine a flashlight in your face? you cant see anything) i dident have any luck though the first stand was a bust and the next place where i was going to go, it is the only place i know with a fox population, but the road was flooded out and i could not get there. so i will try again later, but i could see beter than i thought i would have. i know these tactics are a little crazy but i have wanted to kill a fox for 2 years and cant. i have killed yotes and cats but that is all.

Ross Martin - There is no predator on the earth that is worth taking a chance like that on /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Even on a good moon night with snow, you better look hard and long before you pull that trigger.

If you shoot a non-target animal like someones cat, dog, calf, or deer etc., etc, trust me you don't want that kind of trouble.

Do yourself and all no target animals a favor, and wait for a good bright moon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good hunting, Sleddogg

Ross
I too hunt in Mo. Yes the no light thing is a pain, but remember you can use a good 4 cell mag light to get to and from youre stand /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
If you are caught with a spotlight at night while preditor hunting, its a no no. But I think a strong maglight will get you to and from youre stand without getting you in any trouble /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ross- Listen to Yote poker. There is more than one way to skin a cat---or yote. You can buy red lens for mag lite also. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Of course, I'm willing to bet those guys suggesting you use the light to "walk to your stand" are not going to help you pay your fine.

Good luck....

Hey Ross,Ya know, some guys actually hunt with dogs and ocasionally they can take off and get away fromya. I myself love to hunt rabbits with beagles. In my neck of the woods, we take our dogs pretty serious. If you shot one of my beags, you wouldn't be the biggest thing in the woods. Sure am glad I don't live in Mo. Believe me' I'm saying it alot nicer than 2 of my rabbit hunting buddies. yankeedog

Ross Martin ,

"No lights, no snow, and no moon "

Let me add a few more after reading your posts.
NO BRAINS, NO ETHICS ,NO RESPECT..............oh how about NO License, and NO fire arm?
That is what I hope you end up with if you are clueless enough to go afield with the attitude you put out.
Some of the folks on this thread have treaded lightly.I wont. Your lack of concern and knowledge about using a firearm at night are amazing and dangerous. Your Attitude about non target animals is boarder line criminal.

I , like several others on this board teach Hunter Education
"Know your target and beyond"............. Hunter safety 101.
If you aren't certain what your pulling the trigger on .......DON'T. If your hunting virtually blind and your visibility for a shot is 15 yards your not hunting....your gambling .

And what makes you the expert on deciding what is or isn't a stray cat or dog and weather or not it "needs to be shot"?
Ever lose a beagle on a rabbit hunt and have to throw down a jacket and come back in the morning .
Maybe the Administrators will pull this for being to harsh and not soft and fuzzy friendly.
So Be it.
I don't wish you good luck. I wish you no luck and hope I and any of the fine hunters I know and go afield with never run into you, especially at night when in your eagerness to bag a"stupid fox" you take a shot at one of us . As you said, your " the biggest thing in the woods." The biggest south end of a north bound mule.
. What I do hope is that you take up fishing at night and fall out of the boat.

I'll bring the light.

BTW I'm one of Yankeedogs hunting buddies. The other fella we hunt with , an "old timer" like Yankeedog and me said if ya shot his beagel they would "find you face down in a shallow grave."

Glad we could help you out there son . That bit about the beagles sure struck a nerve with my crew . Night hunting in general brings with it a whole other set of complications in regards to the hunt itself and the level of safety that belongs hand in hand with that hunt . I've been coming to this site for around 3 years now just been a lurker and a reader ( not to chatty sometimes I guess ). It was this thread that put me to register and if you'll notice it was my first posting .
Well enough said , Good Hunting and be careful out there .
BTW. Thanks to all you good folks with all the great info over the years , I guess thats why I never really needed to ask ??? 's it was all here for the takin'> (Retreating to lurk mode)

Onward we go >>>>>>rfm.

all I got to say on the whole matter is ya'll are some ignorant @$$es threatening to kill a person over a dog...

Poor Leroy how unforunate for you , that you sir do not understand .

Allow me ,

Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possesed Beauty without Vanity , Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity ,and all Virtues of Man without his Vices . This praise , which would be unmeaning Flattery , if inscribed over human ashes , is but a just Tribute to the Memory of BOATSWAIN , a Dog .

One more if you will .

He is your friend , your partner , your defender , your dog . You are his life , his love , his leader . He will be yours , faithful and true , to the last beat of his heart . You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion .

With that said , My dogs are part of our family , understand now ?

Onward we go >>>>>>rfm.
