Noob night hunter questions (lights)

I've been reading the multiple light threads and my brain is now mush. Still have a few questions. Do you scan with a white light or colored? Will the white spook coyotes? (my main prey) What color should I use? What are you guys using to mount the shooting light to the gun? I have an AR and a shotgun that I would use depending on where I go. For a beginner and somone who wants to keep it simple and fun which light(s) should I get. I really like the idea of a $20 light vs. $100. Also what is the battery life on said light? Would I need multiple batteries for a night of hunting?
Thanks for any insight. I'm a little overwhelmed.

Here is my logic for a scanning light. All you need a scanning light for is to identify eyes. If 90 percent of people think that red is better than white as far as scanning goes, me being one of them, then scan with a red. You may be able to see further with a white but as long as you can see eyes thats all you need. You really dont lose much distance, even weaker lights will light up just eyes at 200 plus. The 20 dollar headlamp is perfect for scanning for multiple reasons beside the price. The light is right above your eyes which allows you to spot eyes further, the light is bright enough one high with a red filter that it will light eyes up at least 250 to 300, and above all it allows you to scan hands free. I have the cree 501 ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Ultrafire-WF-501B-G6...=item483e2b6a0a ) that I have on my shotgun that is perfect for identifying animals in shotgun range. In my opinion there is not really any room to skimp on price in a kill light for your rifle. The actual kill light from EWT or the Destroyer from sniper hawg lights are the only way to go and tit for tat. With this setup you are almost wireless except for the remote switches and all of the lights use the same rechargable battery which is a big plus. The more things that can go wrong at night will go wrong and it almost always has to do with a light especially when hunting with a partner. Just my 2 cents.

Amber is a good compromise. More range and detail than red and not as bright as white. There's plenty of junk lights from china but there's good one's too. Those expensive ones come from china. Can't go wrong with solarforce. I think they're a step up in quality from the ewt and destroyer for a fraction of the price.

Ya there are so many light in the LED thread I got light overload! Ready to order some lights, still open to suggestions on which ones. One other question. Do you guys turn off the scan light when you turn on the shooting light?

Ive decided to get either the brynyte red light or the ultrafire 501 red light. Anyone try both and like one over the other? Why? Will be useing mostly on a shotgun, but have an AR that I would put it on too if it will reach out far enough.

Scan with the red or amber light. Don't overcall it must sound natural. I call for a few seconds and stop. I repeat this several times all along scanning the area. Once i see eyes comming in i stop calling and go to a squeaker. That's what i suck them in close with for the shot. Don't give up

Thanks for all the tips guys! I'm still on the fence on what to get. Have alot of good info though. Just found out that my hunting partner is going to be working out of town for the next several months. So I won't be out near as much as I was planning this summer. Bummer.

Barrel mounts are pretty simple. Then he can switch from shotgun to AR easily.

I really like the destroyer for a kill light on my rifle. If you mount a scope ring (preferably with a thumb screw for easy on easy off) upside-down on your scope, you can then take a set of two piece scope bases and bolt them together back to back. Marlin 336 2 pc. work great (about 8 bucks). This gets the bell of the light a little higher to miss the scope objective and makes for quick and easy attach and detach. And you can switch the light from one gun to another with multiple setups.
For shotgun take a longer one pc. scope base and zip tie to underside of barrel. I prefer the Sniper hawg light or another smaller light for this. Works perfect! Good luck!
