North Carolina Coyote Population

Do we have any North Carolina hunters out there? I was wondering, is there a strong population of coyotes in North Carolina (Buncombe county in particular)? Do they get big like the ones up in Maine? I was seaching around on the internet and did not find much. All the articles I found were about the Red Wolf, and I am sure they are protected.

It has been said that a squirrel could jump from tree to tree all the way across North Carolina without touching the ground. I am sure that hunting coyotes in NC requires a somewhat different tactic than what we do out here in California where there are wideopen spaces and you can see them from 300-400 yards away.

I've been trying for two years to kill a coyote in NC and have only seen 2 (one in Va and one in Craven county NC. There are a few guys from NC that you'll meet here. Everyone is helpful. The biggest problem here and in the southeast in general remains the lack of available land and sparseness of coyotes. Still fun to get out and try though.

I live in Cherokee Co. which is a couple of co.'s southwest of Buncomb and we seem to have a pretty good abundance of Coyotes. I don't know if they're as big as Maine's, as I've never seen theirs, but I'd say they're as big as Az.'s.
It's very thick cover with a few flat area's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif, so you get a lot of opportunities to shoot straight up or straight down. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I'm not sure what others around here use, but my rifle of choice is a Rem. Model 7 in .17Rem. with a Leu. 1.5 x 5 zeroed to be dead on at 10ft. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (max. shooting distance around here).
