Northern PA coyote hunting

I just got back from a hunt, hit a few spots and nothing. Not even answers to our howls. Bigben and Yotehunter64, I dont believe everything I hear. Tom Bechdel is a retired army veteran and has been doing seminars for over 10 years according to the WVDCNR, anyone who can kill 1 coyote in PA I will take advice from. I dont know about seeing 25 yotes in one field though... I have a good friend who once saw a picture of 17 yotes in a field and swears its legitimate. I have seen alot of bad comments about him and his video, but I enjoyed it. I like how he stresses scent control, and the use of decoys. Can you guys suggest any good movies? I'll try anything to kill more dogs! Unleashed fury, what types of terrain and eco areas do you run your dogs in? and where do they find the yotes?

the best advice I can give you is hunt them like deer. and with that I mean hunt where the deer travel. pinch points have worked well for me. if you are going to howl only do a lone howl. if I am challanged I might challange him back. get in a treestand. hunting in pa supposedly is hard. it took me three years till I got my first. but stay with it. scent control is good but I do not wear scentlok or anything. just watch your down wind side. where I hunt in the mountian the thermals help a lot. most of the time in the morning the wind travels up the mountian and in the afternoon they go down. I try to use that to my advantage as much as possible. do not call a spot more then one time a month if possible. sometimes less is more with coyotes. decoys tend to help get the attention off you.

I never said his video is downright the worst one I have seen. but like I said there are a few things that make me question him. the one where he called in a herd of 25 and killed 7 or so? not sure of the actuall number but in pa you are only allowed to have 5 in the mag. and unless he was using a pump or lever I doubt he had that many. must have looked like rambo headin in with a bunch of mags to pull it off. maybe he did I do not know. but a close buddy of mine told me that he had to give him a coyote hide for his demonstrations. good luck this weekend with your coyotes.

oh you asked about movies. I have brent saxtons which is a good one. byrons movies are good also. I have watched a bit of the primos stuff but never really sat down and watched the whole three hours or whatever one is. hunting the night shift is a must have for someone learning to night hunt.

I hunt at night from time to time, I'll have to chevk it out. Thanks for the tips. I got into yote hunting after the foxes I was hunting dissapeared. I have so many yotes here that in one night I found track of 5 all within a mile, and I only had permission to walk Half the ground In that area. That night was durring distric 9 trappers assoc coyote hunt, but we still failed to kill one.

huh learn something new every day. I had thought there was a restriction to how many rounds you where allowed to have in a rifle. is there rifles out there that can hold 7 or so shells not including the ar's? non of mine will but maybe a pump.

I know there are mag's out there for atleast the pump rifles that hold ten, but lets face it... 7 or 8 yotes on one stand.... unless it is ON VIDEO, i am not buying it... lol i have heard a lot of things, but till I see the proof ... anyone can say anything they want.

Last night I finished making my wireless mp3 caller, downloaded some sounds and just before dark I was showing it off to a friend, and they howled back! They kicked up twice more that night but no sign of em, went out driving around today and found 15 sets of tracks with the most together being 4, I got permission to hunt, and am planning a evening/ night hunt tonight. wish me and my new caller luck!

right now... because there are over 4000 people calling, mainly in central Pa for 3 days...... everywhere i went today, either had been called or run with dogs.

!ouch! that sucks. I drove around today and counted 15 yotes by tracks crossing roads in the snow. I hit a new spot tonight, my buddys was kinda loud on entry as always, and we failed to call anything. so dont feel bad. I just think PA's yotes are too spooky. or something.

if ya wanna make it easier on yourself get someone that is quiet. my sucess goes way down when I take a new caller out and the first thing I tell them in the truck on the way to a spot is do not slam the truck door and do not talk loud once out of the truck. then when we get there they hop out slam the door and turn to me and say how we gonna do this? I just tell em to get back in the truck and off we go to another spot with me tellin em not to talk or slam the door when they get out of the truck with a reminder before we get out. I am not sure about others but crunchy snow does not help either. another reason I can think of is your trying to call a predator that has maybe been called a time or two and have been shot at maybe also. these critters have great eyes and awesome smell. I think the biggest problem is people get out there and howl to much. I used to be one of those people till I realized that challange howl I was doing was hurtin more then helpin. I also do not think the density atleast in my area is real high. this year I only knew of two groups within 20 miles and both groups were called to more then three times before they asked for me to come call. then once I got there and I started calling the barkin and the I busted you howls came I knew the other hunters that were hunting this property had over called em. I asked em how many times they called and they told me all most every weekend for the the last two months. all I can say is persistance pays off. keep at it.

only 2 groups within 20 miles? wow I saw the 15 tracks within 5 miles of my house. I usualy only hunt 3 groups of dogs.. maby I should find new areas.

one yote can leave many tracks, but if he doesnt leave the block then its more then one. I drive slow and it took me and my buddy 3 hours to locate the 15 differnt sets. all within 5 mins of my house.

I hunt with a good crew out of Ny and we killed 28 last year but it was done with the dogs... We also hunted every Fri, Sat, and Sun..

As for the caller i have been out so many times and refuse to give up but i have seen TWO all the times i have been out and never shot one that way...

And here is the thing that ticks me off... My other buddy who traps Dusty Cartrette hangs out with Bill Caston a bit traped 11 of them this year in the places that i call...

I mean i am glad for him , but it makes me wonder what makes these coyotes so different then other places... Some will say it is the breeding of the beast some say it is the high pressure or the northeast ... Who knows if you all figure it out let me know

Bigben hit the nail on the head. You have to be quiet! I hunt Northeast PA and it is NOT easy. There is lots of other guys calling so I try to use what they are NOT using. I hunt thickets and swamps and use distress sounds that match the territory. Use some type of small decoy to keep the attention off of you. Don't call too loud, that will allow you to set up more. I hunt at all times, the a.m. hours seem to be the best but have had success at all times of the day and night. Just keep trying and what works today might not work tomarrow so have a few plans in mind. If you have an area that is filled with tracks try hunting from a stand, they are bound to run by. Carefully scout areas that are not pressured and check with property owners, they may give you permission to hunt coyotes.
