nosler .224 69gr hpbt load question

Been working up loads for my AR (223) as well as my 700 22-250. This is where i am currently:

223- 50 gr nosler BT Silver tip with 26gr of varget. Shoots lights out...under a dime at 100yds.

22-250- 50 gr nosler BT Silver Tip with around 33 gr of IMR 4064, i can shoot under half inch.

So i really don't have any problems so far, they both shoot great after a bunch of load testing. Anyway...i ordered some nosler 69 gr hpbt the other day and am looking mainly for somewhere to start for my 223 for now. My hornady manual really doesn't have and loads for the 69gr bullet. I was thinking about starting somewhere around 22 gr of varget for now to be safe...My AR is a DPMS Sweet 16 with 1-9. Im going pig hunting in march and wanted to take AR just in case i cant get them close enough for bow. So wanted to get a little heavier bullet to try instead of my 50gr and 55 gr bullets.

So any help with a starting point would be great...for my 223 or my 22-250 as well.

Or if i am just going in completely wrong direction let me know

Thanks

just worked up a load for my buddy's ar and i loaded up a 69gr matchking for it. started at 23.5-26gr of varget. his gun never shot over 1.25inches with any of the loads. each load tested was a 5 shot group at 100 yards. his best load was 24gr of varget and it shot a 5 shot group that measure .25inch. it was just one ragged hole.

Ill give it a shot. Bullets should be in today. I thought that heavier bullets generally used less powder like 23 gr instead of like 26 for my my 50 gr bullet

Don't think you will have room enough for 25 or 26 grains. It will spill over the top. Even the 23 grain will crunch when you seat the 69 grain bullet. At least with Varget and RE 15.

i just got done loading some bullets for my 223 and i do reload for a 69gr matchking but i was loading a 55gr bullet and had no problems getting 27.8gr of varget in the case. so with 25-26gr he will have plenty of room.

markley, it's not a question of "room" it's a question of pressure. Plus, a 69 gr bullet seated into a 223 case to fit an AR mag is going to take up a lot of that "extra" space and trying to cram that much extra into that little case could lead to high pressures. AR loads are often lighter than bolt gun loads for that exact reason. Check the newest Sierra manual if you don't believe me.

I'd say somewhere between 23-25 gr Varget should do it.

Idk how you could put over 26 gr of varget in...with 26 I am pretty much smashing the powder with a 50 gr nosler seating at 2.250

My pet load is 25gr of varget and the 69gr nosler match.I like the noslers better they seem to foul less.

Some cases hold more varget than others. Then add neck sized once fired cases to the mix and 27+ grains can fit in 223 case. Different results with some brass and full length resized brass. Might only get 25.5gr in to top of neck.

Unless your 22-250 has a faster than normal twist, I doubt it will shoot the 69 gr bullets worth a hoot! I use them in my 22-250 with an 8 twist - they shoot VERY well.
