Nosler 7MM 140gr Ballistic tip for Black Bear

I have a load made up for my 280 Rem with a Nosler 140g ballistic tip for deer hunting and wanted opinions on using this bullet for black bear.I'm putting in for a Montana deer tag this year and if drawn I'm going to get a bear tag also. It's the most accurate bullet I've found out of everything I've tried.
 
switch to accubonds in the same weight and you should be good. Keep the distance resonable and the shot placement off the shoulder if you can.

I used to shoot the ballistic tips in the 140 grain flavor for whitetail's but they didn't perform well. Had to switch to the accubond's and I suggest you do the same.
 
I've had good luck with nosler hunting ballistic tips,though ever deer I've shot has been at close range ie. 30 yards or less. I have heard good things about accubonds as well
 
I tried the Accubonds and they didn't shoot near as well as the ballistic tips. I always shoot behind the shoulders and feel it will do the job as long as the shot placement is good.
 
if you want to use ballistic tips in 7mm , use the 120's. they have a thicker jacket and penetrate well. my sons and i have taken dozens of deer, several moose and elk with them, from 75 to 400yds with our 280's; never a problem, lee.
 
I killed two bull elk in Az with a 7 mag and 140g Ballistic tips, hit them both dead center of the body as they were on a dead run broadside. They folded up on the spot.

I would opt for a partition myself if I had to do it again, I grabbed the wrong box of shells on two occasions.
 
I hunted black bear over bait once with a 280 Rem loaded with the 140 gr BT but I did not shoot a bear. The 140 gr BT will certainly get the job done.
If you plan on smashing shoulders, I would opt for a more robust bullet like the 140 gr AB or PT.

Only shot 1 bear in my life, but it was with a 280 and a 140gr Ballistic Tip. Bear went 15 yards and tipped over. Bullet performed perfectly with an entry and exit and the required damage to the chest cavity.
 
I do have a load I was working on last year with a 160gr Sierra Gameking with a max load of H4831SC that's showing some promise. I might work with it a little more and just use that if I can get it shooting good.
 
Bear go down just as easy or easier than deer, the BT will be awesome and you do not need an Accubond or Partition for an animal bear and deer sized.
 
Honestly I have never shot a bear with a 7-08 but I have shot a few caribou with a 7-08 and 140 gr. nosler BTs. 2 went through the chest and went? one stopped under the offside hide.
I wouldn't worry about it on a bear.

I wouldn't worry about using the 140 NBT on black bear from a 280 unless it was really close and I'd opt for behind the shoulder then. Once you get out around 150-200 yards go ahead and punch em through the shoulders, they'll work perfectly fine.

I've shot a couple with the 115g nbt from a 2506 and they never went more then few yards, but these were shot from 400 and 600.

Black bears aren't really that hard to kill untill you get to the really big ones, which is where I would prefer a magnum personally.
