Nosler VS Hornady

I’ve never had a dud and always really high accuracy with Nosler box ammo. That said I’ve shot much more Hornady as it’s cheaper. Oh, I suppose I should say I’ve had a good few FTF with Hornady and accuracy is sometimes inconsistent in a same lot number. The worst ammo I’ve shot for FTF and inconsistent FPS has been superformance. I’ll never buy another.

I have had both a bad experience with Hornady's ammo, and customer service. Their .308 150 Grain SST's were in my opinion garbage. They continuously wouldn't eject, and had to be smacked out of the chamber via cleaning rod. Whereas Nosler has been amazing as far as accuracy and mechanically. I was just wondering if I was the only one who has had problems with Hornady? A couple of my friends have had similar experiences with Hornady, and will not use them again. Nosler has been great thus far.

Hornady's customer service was a joke in my experience. They wouldn't replace their faulty ammo, even when I showed them side by side comparions of their ammo from a different lot number as far as the neck of the cartridge goes. The faulty rounds were so shallow that they wouldn't grab and be ejected. Even after I used calipers to determine that they didn't meet SAAMI specs. Oh well, after much debate with their customer service via phone, they wouldn't even replace the box of faulty rounds I purchased, so I have sworn them off and moved onto Nosler. Best decision I've made! Nosler has been nothing but greatness!

It seems there's been a lot of problems from Hornady ammo lately. Heck my f-i-l had a dud last year deer hunting. I never buy ammo but I shoot a lot of their bullets and they're hard to beat for the price.

Yeah after my experiences with hornady I think I will stick to Nosler for sure. Just wanted to see if I was the only one with some problems. Thanks for everyone's input!

i'll agree on Hornady's customer service/ tech. support somewhat lacking from what it was years ago. I'll take Nosler blems (bullets) over Hornady any day. Oly thing with the blems you have to be on your toes finding them. As soon as they are available they are gone. That's my experiance any way.

I have 4 emails to Nosler that are unanswered from last week and the week before.. still waiting.
Hornady is usually the next buisness day on a reply but sometimes the same day. Sierra is always the same day on a email reply.
Besides that i havent ever had an issue with any of their bullets so far. Never shot any of their ammo [beeep].

It's all relative. Nosler has really screwed the pooch when it comes to SSA 6.8 SPC brass. Split cases after one firing are being reported. I like some of Hornady's reloading components. I shot some Hornady 75gr BTHP .223 the other day against some 77gr BTHP Nosler's. They both did ok, the Sierra MatchKings beat them both. To say that Hornady is better than Nosler, or vice versa, isn't looking at the big picture imo.

I have used both Nosler ammunition, bullets and brass without a single problem so far, never had a reason to call them. I have dealt with Hornady and Redding's service department/customer service and all my dealing with them have been outstanding relative to their responsiveness and dealing with my concerns. I use Hornady brass, bullets and their LnL progressive and Redding dies.

I have used both Hornady and Nosler firsts as well as seconds from each company. My experience is that they both have some great slugs and not so great slugs. I have always found the Nosler Ballistic tip and Hornady VMAX to shoot really well (i.e. accurate). However, the Nosler .30 168 gr Custom Competition and Hornady .30 178 HPBT tend to have varying ogives which is not conducive to accuracy.

The seconds from Nosler and Hornady used to be a pretty good deal until Midway and others started selling them.

Lastly, I know you didn't asked about Sierra. However, I'll add this. Sierra is my go to bullet for accuracy from a commodity shop. If talking about the Sierra seconds, I won't go that route again. They're truly seconds and maybe qualify as thirds, fourths and fifths. You buy them by the pound and they look rough.

those of us unhappy with factory ammo tend to start hand loading. otherwise dependent on caliber you might get suggestions from members for other brands of ammo suited for your caliber.

I have only run a few boxes of factory Hornady am and absolutely no problems. The calibers have been: .223, 22-250, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 444Marlin, 45-70. Pistol: 38spl., 357, 40, 44Mag, 45acp, 454 causel, 45LC, 460mag.
Now that said, I handload for all these calibers, and never any problems. 6,000-45acp, 6,000 357 Mag, 3,000 38 special, 6,000 .223 for the AR’s per year. Plus hundreds of the other calibers throughout the year. Yes that is a lot of ammo loaded and, but I shoot a lot of ammo each week of the year either in practice or gun leagues. Sorry but I can’t say anything bad about Hornady. Good luck with your Nosler.

i use both companys reloading components. so far i've had positive results.

i've got a small samling of hornady factory ammo over hte years, but as a reloader i usually reserve factory ammo for basline comparision stuff - so all my volume is my handloads.

i've shot 1st and 2nds from both, and have been pleased witht he comparable results out of either, however most of my stuff sits in red boxes.

Where are you reloaders finding seconds at?

Oh and I've been a Hornady fan boy since beginning to shoot rifle and reloading because i feel the bullets and cases are priced nice but also perform well. I recently purchased 500 Nosler Varmageddon 55gr FBBT to try out in 223rem. I tried their 55gr FBHP and wasn't really a fan. I was able to get one decent group but all other testing it wasn't that great. From what I've read these BT are pretty good and for $63-500 i figured why not.

Anything Hornady i have used other than superformance which is horrible has been spot on but i haven't fired a factory round in probably 3yrs. I tried superformance and at 100yards 2'' plus groups and a few didn't fire.

I watch Midway and some other sites for 2nds or blems.
Shootersproshop has 2nds and overruns from nosler.
Midsouth Shooter Supply has 2nds every now and again.

i use nosler and hornady bullets in several calibers/weights. I use hornady brass in 6.5 grendel and now a fair bit in 223, and have shot some factory ammo in both calibers to get the brass. haven't had any issues with any of it.

been many years since I called tech support for either. both in the distant past were excellent, but no recent experiences.
