Not always as it seems

Yesterday I spent 7hrs at a county commissioners meeting over the proposed closing of a county road at a ranchers request. The courthouse was packed with many like myself that had either been blocked by gates or had confrontations with the rancher. Onx, BLM, Google Earth and DeLorme's A&G show the road to be a through county road. Surprisingly it is not. The first half mile is a county road across BLM land and from there it is private.

A little history, during WW-2 the government build an emergency runway on the ranchers land and the county built an access road to the runway, after the war the land the runway was on was returned to the ranch and what was assumed to be a county road was just a ranch road. And most popular mapping sources are wrong. The county has never put a blade on the ranch road.

If you find yourself in a confrontation be sure you check your sources. I have in my truck a DeLorme's A&G, a BLM map, a public lands chip in my gps plus I have onx on my home computer. I used to carry a computer and a hot spot to check the county assessor mapping to see who actually paid the taxes on a parcel of land where there are discrepancies.. in this case all were wrong.

Interesting day.

Good hunting
