Not as cool as Jeremy

I was standing there in all my uglyiness fixing to jump into the shower, wife comes in hollers, "groundhog alert"! I said where? Out by the pond. Jumped in the shower done a quick splash got my shorts on and tripod was sitting on the porch. 30 minutes later, there was a dead groundhog. LOL

While we're reminiscing, I still vividly remember my first big game kill.....

Back when I was a little tyke, I had one of those state of the art dart guns that shot the plastic rubber plunger tipped darts.

While on one of my many safaris, I saw a mouse run behind the TV, so I grabbed my elephant gun, pulled off the protected tip, and shot that bastard dead before he could charge.

Since he was my first kill, I wanted to get him mounted, but the hide spoiled before I could peddle him to the taxidermist.

Done that myself a time or two. Once naked off the deck šŸ˜‚

That’s awesome!!! I shot a lot of stuff with one of those till it broke but never killed anything. You win so far!!

We always thought th Red Ryder was kind of wimpy and hĆ d a pump BB gun, not a pump up one but just a single.long pump and load a bunch of bbs in a fat barrel. We.were.hell on striped gophers and frogs.

I looked it up,.a Daisy Model 25

A springer? Break barrel?

Never owned one, but shot a friend's; it was much more accurate and hit lots harder than the RR.

Yeah, The RR was pretty wimpy, Thinking back on it, I had a Single pump Daisy between the RR and the 760. It was the model 840 and google says it was putting out a whopping 350 fps. It wasn't much more powerful than the RR if memory serves, but I don't recall how fast the RR was. The 760 was much more powerful with it's ability to pump it multiple times and build pressure. After the 760 I had a Crosman 2100 Classic, and a 2200 Magnum. It seemed like all of my lawn mowing money went on airguns or fishing supplies! I bought a used Crosman 1400 22 Cal and drilled through the wooden stock and mounted one of those steel, no drill side mounts that fit 870 and 1100 shotguns and mounted an original Gen 1 Aimpoint red dot on it! My dad had purchased it and didn't like it so I asked if I could "use" it. I had a $10 used airgun with a $200 sight on it and it was my first venture into gunsmithing at about age 12! Lol... I still have the gun but the sight and mount are long gone. I need to rebuild it as it was literally my favorite airgun ever. I did rebuild a vintage Crosman model 140 that I inherited when my Father In Law passed away.

This is kinda fun strolling down memory lane and thinking about how my obsession got it's start.

When I got a little older a got a Benjamin pump up .177 pistol that had some power. That was my last foray into airguns, received a 22 LR about the same time. Dad would let me take the pistol. Out Al New but needed him to be with me to hunt with the 22

Yeah, I got my first 22 on my 10th birthday. Marlin 781 bolt action. My shooting with that was limited to range time with my dad. At the time, here in NY you couldn’t legally hunt small game until you were 14 years old. It has since been lowered to 12. Anyway, from my house in the city I was not more than a few minutes walk to an area we called ā€œThe Flatsā€ which is the area around the Mohawk River. This was also the area of the burned out Durrs Packing Company building that held the trophy pigeons and occasional homeless guy down on his luck! Lol… My airguns saw a lot of use in those days. For a short stint there was a small operation called Upstate Hide and Skin that operated in a small facility close to Durrs and they would push all of the cow ears and tails into a large cement 3 sided enclosure. This would of course attract rats. My brother and I went into the place once and met a guy working there named Fat Frankie. We asked if we could shoot the rats and he said ā€œSure, but I didn’t tell you thatā€. We only heard ā€œSureā€ and went on to kill a few rats. Then the police showed up! I guess someone else saw us and called the cops. We said we had permission and when the cop asked Fat Frankie he said he didn’t know anything! We were like, WTH! But then he started laughing and told the cop that he did tell us to go ahead. I guess working in a puddle of blood in a stinky hide packing warehouse makes you have a slightly twisted sense of humor?

I plum wore out a Daisy 880 as a kid. That thing kill a ton of critters, rabbits, squirrels, crows, groundhogs all kinds of birds. Graduated to the .20 cal Sheridan, I thought I was hot shit with that thing, Accuracy was a huge bump up. Still have it, Its been rebuilt a few times. My dad used to hunt rabbits with it in town, winter time, full moon in the early 80's.
