So They private property I can hunt is hit or miss with turkey flocks. So I never know if thery;re there when I rollin bfore first light. I have not got a single gobble off of a owl hoot, or a crow call. What to do? Different locater call? Which? Or?

Thanks fellas!

Well, they don't gobble every day. And, if they aren't there at all, then you know the answer to that. If you're pretty confident there are turkeys on the place when you're there and owls/crow calls don't work, then try some high spirited cutting with a high pitched long box or glass pot/peg type call. Sometimes you can strike a gobbler with some sudden, loud, cutting on a high pitched turkey call. Be close to a place you can set-up, especially on a small property, because a gobbler could be closer than you think. You need to be able to set-up right then and start working the bird. If nothing else works, find a good set-up spot on long ridge or bottom, and set-up for a couple of hours giving some soft, seductive, low volume yelps and clucks. Use your hands to make scratching sounds in the leaves - lightly. Give a few soft calls every 15 - 20 minutes and just sit still and be observant. A turkey not in the gobbling mood will often respond by simply walking in, sneaking and peeking. Or, he may strut in drumming and spitting, but not gobbling.

The only luck I have had with a yote howl he sounded like he was miles away. I think if they are roosted not to far away it shuts them up . You could try a pileated woodpecker call and even a primos gobble shaker but be careful with the gobble shaker you dont want someone hunting you! I have tried these and they seem to work.

You can also try gobbling with a box call. It has to be one with rubber bands on it, grab the front of it and give it a good shake. They make those gooble tubes you just shake too. Weve got them to gobble at late afternoon doing this.

any time i hear a crow i stop and and make some calls with the box call, like im trying to respond to the crow, i usually get some turkeys answer me after that. I seen about 20 turkeys out in the field and about 5 toms and fanned out, they wouldnt make a sound, it was small jakes or hens that were doing all the squakin

things will change as it gets closer to hunting season when the toms are out hen hunting

they will answer a lot more

I just don't think the gobblers are fired up yet.

They have hens all around them all the time right now, wait a week or two then the hens will start leaving the gobbler about mid morning to go sit on thier eggs, and then he will start making some noise off the roost.

I have only heard one gobble this year while he was on roost, after he hit the ground he didn't make another sound.

And this cold snap we are having isn't helping matters any.

Try using a fish call Tres. They like to roost above a creek. I once was told by field sleeper named Mary that they prefered trout howls.

If they won't gobble on their own, then they won't gobble much or at all to locater calls. If you know where they roost then just setup at daylight and start calling. If they are there they may respond. The cold weather shuts them up around here. I'm still waiting for Virginia season to open next weekend, April 14th. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Make sure your not getting too close and "bumping" them. Also If you drive to this location park a loong ways back from where you think they may be. Also be very quiet with car doors.

Good hard cutting on glass, crystal, aluminum pots, box call or 3 or 4 reed mouth call works good if you don't want to use turkey sounds use a coyote howler, goose call, sand hill crane or anything else that is loud.
