Nothing Given by the Cold

We fought through brutal cold and ripping winds to hunt the Canute Coyote Calling Contest. In 24 hard hours we stacked 28 coyotes and a bobcat, taking first for most coyotes and the Calcutta, plus the side pots for smallest coyote and biggest bobcat.

This cat is what closed out the big cat side pot.

It takes a certain madness to punish yourself willingly, hunting the spark that pulls you through the cold.

It started very slow. We were worried by noon we had only called in 2 coyotes. A front hit the night before and we started hunting at first light. Everything was locked down and we made a lot of blank stands

Ever since these contests started becoming popular, I never really had much interest in them. I’ve always said I’m not a contest hunter. Over the past year, though, I started hunting with a couple of guys from out of state, and from the very first hunt we clicked like we’d been hunting together for years. They enjoy hunting contests, so I figured I’d give it a try with them. I’ve only done two so far, and honestly, we did better than I ever expected.
