NY game laws… Head shakers!

I'm just thankful we can still hunt. Not so sure about the next generation.
...... So we have a season on coyotes. October 1st thru March 31st. 24 hours a day, no limits......

March 30th, don't get jammed up.

I'm just happy we can still hunt period. Not so sure about the next generation.

@Don_P Thanks. Yes, March 30th is correct for 2024-2025 season. My original post on this topic was last summer and I used the correct date for 2023-2024 season, which ended on March 31st.

Hopefully people actually look at season dates from legit sources, rather than me on a forum from last season! Lol… Screenshot from 23/24 DEC regs

Just something for the sake of conversation…

So we have a season on coyotes. October 1st thru March 31st. 24 hours a day, no limits.

During the off season there is the right to protect your property. Buildings, animals, livestock etc. This can be done by the landowner or lease holder, immediate family of the landowner or employee of landowner.

This seems okay at first blush but I’ve spoken to our conservation dept. and you need to be able to prove you have a problem. To quote the encon officer I spoke with, he said “Not every coyote that crosses the back 40 is a nuisance animal.”

While I agree with this, I also understand and respect the perspective of the farmers that call on me to help protect their stock. The D.E.C. (Dept of Environmental Conservation) needs proof so a Farmer needs to wait for injury or death of their property. Farmers don’t want to lose a $1000 calf to show proof.

I personally do not enjoy the heat and mosquitoes during the summer months but I do help out the farmers when they need it. I’d rather let the pups make it to fall when it’s more enjoyable for me and better suited to pup survival of Sportzfy App. I have a different perspective of coyotes than these folks. I hunt for the enjoyment and to feed my addiction! They’re trying to make a living.

Anyone deal with similar laws or moral struggles dealing with the law and landowners?

Bob,
I hunted deer season in NY for years-just the first 2 days. Shotguns only. The 3 of us got at least 1 buck every year.
Now goofy laws------come to NJ ----buy a $2.00 permit bring any rifle up to .24 caliber-AR included only 3 rounds total!! No bullets over 80 grains-must have a call. Season starts 1/1/2027 -rifles only in daylight-shotguns only at night. Season ends around 3/15/2027. Don't forget to call in your harvest if you get one.
You can shoot a bunch of anterless deer and about 5 bucks in different seasons each one is a new $$ permit.
Who luvs ya baby!!!
Soup

PS The Atlantic Ocean is still free-no season-BUT you have to buy a beach tag. We just had a bad coastal storm and the US Govt is going to replenish the
beach with some of the tax dollars from the guys in Kansas--then charge him to walk on the beach and look at the Atlantic Ocean!!!!

Bill, I understand that NY isn't alone in the dumb rules category. There's a lot that could (should) be changed regarding game laws in many states. A ton of them make zero sense in our day and age. A lot of them are nothing more than money grabs. In some cases it's nothing more than politicians pandering to certain groups and chipping away at our rights. And a huge amount is simply the people calling the shots know nothing about the sport, the animals or the environment. No science or field knowledge of what they're proposing and writing into law.

That said, this is a post from a year or more ago that addisonjerry brought back by quoting my post and then picking one sentence from my post as a reply. It seems to be this member's thing actually. It happens pretty much every time they post something. Just grab a line from the post they quote and repeat a sentence. Occasionally there's a question of sorts that is a jumble of words that you can't make sense of. Me thinks BOT!

Soup, I don't even know how to respond to that beach stuff. But then again, Govt at work.
AND Bob, can't agree more about the statement of people calling the shots!!
