how many dogs do you guys have shot forthis year so far, and how long do ya usually hunt, i mean do ya all hunt all year long or jus through winter

I usualy hunt till march, then lay off till next fall, unless I get any problem calls.

I dont know my exact numbers, I would haft to check my note for the year. I think im up to 12 coyotes here in the east that I shot. And there are a few more called for other people. And a few misses in there as well. Im not sure what my fox numbers are for the year but they were not very good this year. Its been a tough year around here.

BRENT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION HAVE NOT SEEN ANY OR ANY SIGHN OR HEARD ANY LATELY HAVE ROAD KILL DEER OUT FOR THEM THEY HAVENT BEEN COMING IN TO IT

Robert,

I havent seen a drop off here as far as sign goes and they have been more vocal here than usual for the last few weeks. I figure thats due to the breading season. I been seeing alot of sign, tracks, and scat and the coyotes here in this area seem to moving fairly good right now. It hasnt been a very hard winter so far, and they havent had a hard time finding food. We also havent had much snow here in the southern part of the state. So food hasnt been a problem.

Can you get any vocal responces at night?

went out last night and threw up a challenge howl
sounded like 5or6 went nuts we heard something from what I believe to be a large male that was hard to explain almost like a rappid bark howl whine? does anyone know what this was? we tried to mimic him and he became highly agitated pacing back & forth repeating it. also some of the others were yiping or barking. after a while they continued on out the ridge side. we heard them howl about 1 hr. later 3/4 of a mile away they crossed right through a residential open area. we knew it was him though his voice is unmistakable. also the line of travel is exact.the other thing that was fasinating to hear was the old western movie bark bark howl odd enough but that is the first time i remember hearing it in the wild.I usually hear howl alone or yip orbarks. also is there any coralation between calm cold bright nights before a storm front in coyote observation/taking? i also tried a ki yi they went silent for a few then went insane again.wow what a night!!!!!!!!!

rapidly becoming a coyote junkie

Took one Saturday eve, then made 4 stands on Sunday and got back doored on the third stand. The weather has been so messed up here havent got to hunt much in the last few weeks, now its ice and snow here, calling for bad weather all week.

I'm hoping to go out this coming Thursday afternoon. Will see how the weather holds up, mostly just snow here. I'll post my results.

The snow is all right as long as it dont freeze solid as a rock, they seem to move good here in the snow. The wind here now is bad!

I really dont know. We have had some pretty good snows here over the years that I have killed coyotes in. They haft to feed. Sometimes they dont move real well during the storm but before and after the storm are great hunting. Snow has alway been good to me, rain and wind are the two I hate. The will change up there travel patterns here when the snow gets deep and use the easy travel lanes to get from place to place. The will take the easy path most of the time anyway. We dont get enough snow around here anymore to slow them down at all. I know up north they will use the snow mobil paths as travel lanes when the snow gets deep, and they will run the beat down deer trails here, cattle paths, and pine thickets to stay out of the deep snow.

thanks again you should write a book. Its snowing like mad here right now so maybe this week sometime when it breaks.I found a couple of spots with hair on the bottom strands of barbed wire I was thinking of sneaking in & trying it. Do they usually bed on the inside of a thicket or the edge? Or do they usually bed in dens? last do you have any idea about what the sound I described in my 2/20/05 post was it almost sounded aggressive.

Sounds like he challenged you back. Hard to say with out being able to hear the sound. I usually wont challenge howl unless they challenge me first. Unless it is a last effort to try and get one to respond. But thats just my 02.

I think what I would do, with the snow on the ground I would get in there and see if I could find there travel lanes and see were they are going and coming from. And how they are geting from point A to Point B. If they are beding up in the thicket then I would pick my set up with the down wind blowing across the open field. That way they haft to cross the open to get down wind. Most of the time they just bed up down inside the thickets, maybe on the edge maybe deep inside. Thats why I would get in there and do some scouting and find all the pieces to the puzzle. Then you can pick the best set up. Cold calling here in the east is tough. I try to pick the best stands I can and dont worry about making 20 stands a day. I may make 5 stands in a day but there all good stands, stands that I know there are coyotes there and have scouted the area the best I can. even then I get busted, you never know what the coyotes are going to do! Most of the time dens are not active here unless they are raising pups.

Hi fellas, New member here. I've been reading the forum for weeks now and I'm addicted. Finally joined.
Been calling for 2 years and got my first Ohio coyote in january. Called in 2 but didn't see the other untill I was walking up to the one I shot. Big lesson learned there. No snow here but I would love to have about 6 inches so I can see them better. I think its harder for them to find food when there lots of snow. When we had some snow and ice on the ground I found where the coyotes were digging thru the snow and ice for mice. I could go for 10 below and snow.
