ohio coyote hunters?

I live in Westerville and a pro to hunting but a newby to yotes. I recently been to Big Island in Marion. Have seen plenty of sign, but no luck calling anything in the past few times. Delaware state park, ranked #1 in the state for yotes according to ODNR has been decimated by the flood (4800 acres under water of the 5000) and killed all the mice, voles etc. Any recommendations for Central Ohio yote hunting? Bob

Bob, Well if all the mice and voles are gone, the coyotes will be hungry. I'm certainly no expert but have learned much spending hours reading the forum. Don't be surprized to call at least 10-15 different places before you see one. Eventually one will show and you will get it.

thank you kee makes sense, one question if I scout that hard will it move them out? Welcome 222shooter and Behconsult south ohio sure is nice I went to the jackson apple fest this fall.kee I'd borrow your $0.02 anytime your willing to lend it.maybe this weekend is it.

Hey Behconsult I work there in Westerville and live in Knox county I see way more yotes in and around westerville than I see around home. Its too bad we cant figure out a way to coax them out east. LOL. Its real good to see this thread continue.

Good to find a forum of locals (Ohio). Yes, I hear yotes all around Westerville at night. I've only seen red fox though around here. When I went to Delaware park it was waste land. I have never seen anything like it before. Given such wide spread destruction the ranger said they moved out to other area. 5k acres is a lotta land under water. Below are a couple interesting links.

Those maps are interesting thanks for posting them.I just returned from yote hunting at Woodbury. I started with locating howels at 4:30AM in four different spots with no response. I set up and called two spots where I have seen sign in the past. No one home. I checked out a road kill they were previously working. No sign It sure was a beautiful morning to be out though

If Delaware is under water, then find the private land around it and ask for permission there. that's were the Song dogs went. they want to the food, the rabbits and mice on the other farms are where they are, and I believe that song dogs travel they don't just stay in one place they have a territory of about 3 to 5 miles. this I learned while trapping. I always go in and check out the area before I call. I may go in and scout and call at the same time, but I try to pick prime stands. I also make myself a map of the area and keep very good records on them, were I see the sign were I called from, future set ups, wind, weather, all that stuff. Then when I do go back I got all the info I need.

I do alot of my scouting in the off season. I locate with a howler in the spring and summer when they are raising pups, and keep all of my respnces marked on a map. Then I go in and do my scouting in the early fall in these areas. Its alot of work but come time to call it pays off. Sometimes it takes several calling and scouting trips to figure out an area, I have one area that I hunted this year, that I still havent figured out. I know they are there but just cant put all the pieces to the puzzle togeather. I will though, its just a matter of time.

They seem to have big home ranges here, and with all the small farms it is tough to get there patterns down. And they may not be staying on the farm your hunting. There has to be coyotes there to call them, and sometimes there somewere else in there teritory. Its just like a puzzle, once you get all the pieces they fall togeather.

Hey Bob, welcome. Well I went out this morning, and it was a bust. My reed froze half way through my second series of howls, and sounded like a teenager hitting puberty. If I had a coyote coming, he sure wasn't coming now. Well, for some reason I tried the PC-2 Cottontail with no luck. I think I'm done for the year. Oh yeah, I've been to delaware and haven't seen a coyote there either. Park Ranger said maybe up near the Marion county line part of the park.

Went out Saturday morn., in Vinton County, in the 3-4 inches of fresh snow. Tried to get me the illusive Vintonamese coyote. Made three setups but no takers. Did see what appeared to be 4 sets of coyote tracks running together. Couldn't tell for sure because of the falling snow covering them up, but their behavior was coyote like if you know what I mean. Could 4 be running together now during the mating season?

Beautiful morning to hunt!

I may go out one more time before storing my equipment. Ohio is expecting some more snow in the Central part this week. I think in the future I may give night hunting more of a try. The 10-15 stands is a lot of hunting time before bagging. From what I have been reading on the forum, night hunting really changes the odds. I did have some luck calling in a few in southern Ohio (Perry county). The snow was pristine and when I walked back three sets of tracks did a loop over mine and turned back. Must have winded me!

Question for KEEKEEYELP: Do you use your locator call at night when scouting? Do your scouting/calling mostly during the day. I never get an answer when calling during the daylight. Next question: I clicked on your moderator ID, checked out your web page and saw a picture of my wife wearing antlers???

I di my locating by howling at night in the spring and summer, and most of my scouting is done in the spring and summer and early fall. I keep good records and logs as to were I hear them and what I find scouting. These come in handy in the fall.

I do most of my hunting in the day. You wont get many vocal responces here during the day, but they will come in. I may get one or two vocal responces during the day for the hole season, but they will respond to the howling, I mix my howling with destress sounds, except for this time of year or breading season. I will make alot of stands with just howling and pup destress this time of year starting in Jan. Just depends on the area.

Night calling will up your odds. During fur season here they get hunted at night hard and lots of fox hunters out there to. I like to change things up, there are not alot of day callers here yet. and I just like to hunt during the day better, I do spend some time out night calling.

LOL...you never know what you will see on the web!

By the sounds of it your shotgun should be good.I would shoot it and see how well it does at diffrent ranges, I use a 3" mag myself when I pack a shotgun.

Mating season is still going on here but they will be wraping things up real soon.

Im looking for a early fall or late summer release on the video, if all goes well with the editing.

Can anyone in the Ohio food chain tell me what month in the fall the pelts are good and they start yote hunting? I love the outdoors/hunt but want to hunt for pelt. B

we had a good hunt saturday morning, even though the weather wasnt great. we shot a big female right at daylight. we give it to a local guy to skin out because we had destroyed the hide with the shot. we seen the guy at the local restaraunt that evening. he said there was 4 pups allready in that female. that sort of baffled me, unless they were small i couldnt see them being fully developed yet. i might be wrong. i didnt go into detail with the old timer but i took his word on it.

Called one in with a howler this morning. It came trotting across a cut bean field up wind of us about 100 yards then disappeared over a rise. tried to coax it in with a squealer. Nothing. Waited for a good 15 more minutes with some more howls but it didn't show. Don't know what went wrong. Must have got busted.

I would like to pass on some good info for all of you columbus and delaware guys. A reliable hunter I work with spotted a pack of yotes north of 42 and south of ostrander this might be some of the yotes ran out by the high water. He doesn,t hunt yotes and its too far for me to go. So for what its worth there it is. Let me know if you find anything. T Harris
