Whats a good load for lighter recoil practice? I just got my 1895 CB today and fired two rounds just to see what it was like and loved it. Im sure after a few rounds the arm and shoulder will be quite soar but I didnt think it felt bad at all today. Still need to find some light loads for plinking.I can see this gun and caliber being addictive. Oh yes and I would prefer to shoot lead not jacketed and no black powder just smokeless.
Thanks
Daryl P.

Thanks Smokeless. Trail Boss is just one powder or are there different numbers like IMR has the 4350,, 4227 and so on. Or is Trail Boss just Trail boss? I will try and find some.
Thanks
Daryl P.

Ernest, I have tried all kinds of sights on my 1895CB. What works the best forr me is the true-glo TG111W sights. I have shot 2 moose and a black bear with them and they are easy to see. As for a huting load. Any descent 405gr SP will take deer and black bear. I shot my BB with a 405 Woodleigh and 43.5 of Re-7 at 1940 fps. The two moose were shot with 525 gr pile driver over 41.0 of H332 for 1610fps (one shot each). Both are chronographed velocitys. Living in Alaska those pile drivers are the heat, nothing stops them. Both loads are super accurate also. Good luck.

Trail Boss is one powder. With a 300gr bullet, 14.0 to 16.5gr

With a 405gr bullet, 12 to 13.0gr

These are "plinking rounds"

Thankyou both very much. I appreciate the help.I do always ck my manuals before I try anyones loads but like the info to help on finding what I want.

My manuals usually have 3 load classes for the 45-70. Stick with the trapdoor loads, should be very pleasant to shoot.

So the trap door loads are lighter than the others.Less pressure? SO the trap door wasnt as strong as the 1895 Marlin is? Iappreciate the help.
Daryl P.

Trapdoor loads are around 25,000-28,000psi for shooting in older rifles. Mid-rage loads (40,000psi)are for modern Marlins, Winchesters etc. Third class is for Ruger No.1 at 50,000psi.

My light load is 15gr of Unique under a Lee 457-405-F that I cast out of water quenched wheel weights for 1200fps. This bullet drops out of the mold at 459 so I shoot as cast.
My load for when rabid bison invaid from Wyoming is 46gr of H322 under a Ranch Dog 425gr gas checked bullet for 1800fps. This bullet drops out of the mold at 461. I size it to 460 when I'm installing gas checks.
All in Starline brass with CCI 200 primers shot out of an 18" Guide Gun.

My question is what is up with the light loads? These guns are made to kick like a mule, and kill anything they are aimed at. I love the grin I get for the next week after shooting these Big Bores. I want my guns to shoot the same every shot, so I don't have to worry where they will hit. JMHO and $.02, on this subject, Good Shooting----Riflemann

They used to whack buffalos with the trap door rifles. In comparison to modern guns, they were extremely light loads. But big heavy bullets at low velocity makes for a dead animal and a happy shoulder.

When i first got my nef 45-70 i was also given a factory box of ammo. Pull the trigger and a boom like a cannon, push on the shoulder. After that i loaded up to the point pulling the trigger could make a geown man cry.

The light loads are a ton more fun to shoot, and will still drop pretty much anything you point it at.

I worked up my light load to get use to the gun. I have some loaded still for other people to shoot.
The point of impact between the light loads and heavy loads are so great that all I shoot, and am sighted in for are the heavy loads.

IMR-sr4759 for me and my 18.5" barreled 1895G. In the 1st pic the round out of the group was from a clean bore and then a 5 shot group, lower pic is a 5 shot group with a fouled bore:

I understand the light loads, I have had buddies shoot my 444 full loads, and most of the time 1-2 shots is all they want to shoot.(Yes I am a little sic for watching others feel a little pain for a few days afterwards). We all like our Big Bores for the same reason, because they are fun to hunt with. Great Topic guys,----Riflemann
