Oklahoma hunters

Sasquatch... I'm all for the idea... If we are going to do this, we need to do it pretty quick... Have any of you other guys though much more about having a mass varmint slaying down in Honobia Country??? There is some big country down there and some big clear cuts... I was down there several weeks ago and saw lots of varmint sign... I like the idea... How about the rest of you guys??? I would like to see some of those "out west" guys participate... Shooting varmints with trees in the way would be a whole new game for them... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Just kidding /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyone else have some ideas???

Count me in! I haven't hunted coyotes much around here in Oklahoma so I know nothing about the public areas anywhere in the state but I think this would be a great opportunity for me to gain some knowledge about the area and of course meet some of my fellow Predator Masters! You guys name the time and place and I will show. I might even bring a friend along with me. This sounds great!Lets keep up the good suggestions and make this happen! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Today I will look for some of the Honobia Creek Brochures. If I find some I will let u know and will mail them out to u.

I found 10 of the brochures and maps of the Honobia Creek WMA. It is 275,000 acres and borders alot of other public lands. If u will email me I will give u my address and if u send a sase Ill send u a brochure, map. Also a person may contact the wildlife dept at 405 521 2730 and they may send one to you.

Im ready looks like we might have three or four willing to go . How about Feb. 8 and 9 I believe this is the second weekend of the month . I will need to see if I can get off of work for that saturday which might be hard due to taking the last two and first two days of febuary and march off. If I due work I will be down saturday night. if any one else has any dates that will be better please post them.

Lets give everyone a few days before we set the final date to make sure it will fit all calendars. What do you all think about making this a calling contest and if we do then what should be the rules.

I've got an idea... There are not too many landmarks in that part of the world... But the first one that comes to mind is the Honobia Store... You guys can also get your $16 Land Access Permits there... We could all meet at a specific time and date, look over the maps, and go from there... Maybe we could split up in teams and try and "tag team" the varmints... This would give folks a chance to see someone elses hunting tactics, or let a less experienced hunter go with somebody more experienced... I'm not that good, but I've been studying some new tactics... I've got an idea for hunting a clear cut that just might work... I don't know about you guys, but I think a shotgun with some high brass ammo may be what the doctor ordered for that part of the world... Anybody else have some suggestions???

Im all for it Cosmic. It sounds like a very good plan to me. I would highly reccomend a shotgun. I hunt regularly in the area and have never shot more than 50 yards.
Im sure that a partner would add up to higher numbers of coyotes taken, and like you said it would be good camraderie and a chance to learn diffrent methods.
Heck somemone may even call in a sasquatch calling around Honobia. I dont know if you guys remember but about 2 yrs ago a man said that he shot a sasquatch in his front yard. I never did hear anything else about it though maybe they were afraid of a family feud? Honobia is awful close to the Ark. border may have been a case of mistaken identity. hehe
Ok, all kidding aside I hope this works out Im really looking forward to it.

I do not know that store but with a few directions I will find it. I will make what ever date is decided. I do not think my hunting partner will make it so if some one needs a partner I should be available and I know a good bit of the southern end of this area. E-mail me at CHRIS75462@yahoo.com

I dont have a partner either, maybe the solos could draw names for a team mate?

Is this going to be a competition? If so what are the rules and entry fee, prize?

If it is going to be a contest how about cats worth 10 pts. yotes worth 8 pts. and fox worth 6 pts. 10 bucks per person plus an extra 5 for each heaviest catagory you enter . If it does turn into a contest this could be rules . i myself personly like the get together of new friends to share a hobby we all like. I will let you all set the date and time all I need is directions to the store coming from poteau.

What all dose a guy need besides a hunting license? I don't think you need anything for coyotes but isn't there a permeant or tag you need to take cats? if there is anything else let me know. Any date and time is good for me all I need are directions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It dosent matter to me if its a competition hunt either. Just one thing the fox season will close the 31 of January. So a fellow wouldnt want to take any fox.

If you go to mappoint.com and put in the city you want to arrive at it will give you accurate directions to Honobia. There is only one store in the town, its real easy to find once you get to honobia. If you stop to ask directions from the locals the towns name is pronounced
ho-nub-ee.

Hey ya'll... First of all, the guy that claimed he saw the Bigfoots on Honobia Mountian was seeing a "meth monster"... Its a long story, but I was a LeFlore County deputy then, and I had the inside scoop...

In my opinion, this doesn't really need to be a competition with entry fees and prize money (that is some food for thought though)... Everybody is going to have to purchase the Land Access Fee ($16 for OK residents and $25 for non-residents), and its a long drive to Honobia from anywhere... Folks in Honobia are so far out they don't get the Grand Ole Opry until Sunday night... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm good friends with some of the game wardens that cover the Honobia and 3 Rivers areas... They will be out checking hunting licenses and land access permits... ANY PERSON ON THE HONOBIA CREEK AND 3 RIVERS AREAS HAS TO HAVE THE LAND ACCESS PERMIT... THE GAME WARDENS WILL WRITE YOU A TICKET... IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE FISHING, HUNTING, OR BIRDWATCHING... The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife has a website with all the hunting/fishing regulations and license prices...

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation

Before I forget, I've got some good news and some bad news... (depends how you look at it) Good news first... The president has said varmint season in the middle east is opening soon...

The bad news is I will be there for opening day... My reserve unit is being called up and I will be gone before the end of the month... I wonder what the limit is??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif In fact I need to get off here and get to sleep because I have to be at the Tulsa reserve center early in the AM...

I guess it all depends on how you look at it...

I can't wait to get my first "trophy turbine"... I hear tell the M-16 is a pretty good varmint gun... If you ask me, there is nothing but varmints in that part of the world... Hey Travis, do you make any "towel head" calls???

If I get the chance I will get on here and give you guys the hunting report... I will post the Middle East Hunting Report on the Predator Hunting topic... The one where we post this one...

I wish I could attend the varmint hunt in Honobia County... I love spending time in the mountains... I hope you guys have a good time...

I'll check in with you guys before I ship out...

Cosmic Cowboy , you be careful over there and bring yourself back in one piece. I hear if you rub two pieces of sandpaper together they will come runnin. They save the heat off the sand will mess with your aim so just shoot the one in the middle.

Is this going to be a one day hunt? Or over a weekend. At the honobia store is some cabins next to it. If it was going to be more than a 1 day hunt would probably be a nice place to stay. Also what time are we going to meet?

If any one plans on shooting at bobcats they will have to get a RCF permit in addition to a hunting license and a land access permit. For a resident the RCF is only 9 dollars but im not sure for nonresidents Ill try to find out.
