Oklahoma Open Season on Mountain Lion

Yes Sir! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif You read that correctly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

SB 1296 has passed the Oklahoma House and Senate. It is awaiting signature from Governor Brad Henry.

The bill:

http://webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us/2005-06bills/SB/SB1296_ENR.RTF

allows open hunting for Mountain Lion and Black Bear. As with all Bills this on reads like a contract. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The post above is the final draft that was sent to the Governor for signature.

In order to encourage the Governor to sign the bill, please call (405) 521-2342. I have already done this. It was my first time to call in support of a Bill. I just told him that I am a resident of Oklahoma and strongly encourage the Governor to Sign SB 1296 into law. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Funny thing is that last winter we had "no Mountain Lions" in the State of Oklahoma. Now we are weeks away from hunting them due to over population. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Hmmm, you ought to tell those lions in the Western Panhandle that they don't exist there. We've had one making the rounds for the last 2 years east of Guymon on our place.

Hot Dang, I know where to find three cats right now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Looks like there will be mounts and rugs for the house this year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
Funny how the Oklahoma DNR is going to open a season on things that don't exist here. Bears? where do we have Black Bears? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Never seen one in Oklahoma. but I will find one before season opens.

Radd4,

Have heard several reports, some by creditable sources, of a black bear around Lamar.

I would think that a 3600 acre (5.63SQ Miles) lease is considered huge and not the norm here in Ok. As much ground as the lion and bear travel, it would be chance to draw the tag and have the lease on the most often used ground, as well. The management areas might be different story.

Ol Man Rooster Feather called the Governor's Office today. They informed him that Ol' Governor Brad Henry sign the bill into law yesterday.

Now to the classified to buy a mountain lion gun, call, tanning kit, and stalking device.

there is bear in eastern OK . for sure wont be supprised to see pictures of them posted but lions (show me )

Pup and crossxsticks

I have a 1800 acre lease in (north central) Oklahoma, I have seen three mountain lions on my lease, we have been seeing them for 6 years. I have had a mama and her two cubs within 35 yards of me and they knew I was there but they were not moving like they were scared of me in the least. I do not have any pictures, i do not normally carry a camera to the stand with me, maybe I should. If the time comes that I have pics I will post them. I believe you that there are bear in Oklahoma, as a matter of fact I am going bear hunting with my bow in Arkansas (on the Oklahoma boarder) in October. Ask ol' Rooster feather if there are Mountain lions in Oklahoma, Hey Rooster what is your .02 cents?

Ok, I don't want to spoil the celebration. The way I understood this bill when I read about it a few weeks ago, was that it didn't allow the hunting of cougars and bears, but it would allow the wildlife department to set a season in the future as they see fit. But the article I read said that no near season would be anytime soon. Correct me if I'm wrong. But hey I do know that there will be a season on the Red Fox in Oklahoma next year with a season limit of 2!

did you read link at the top? I called the Gov's office and the suit I talked to that took my vote said there would be a season. I guess we will find out in July.

In considering whether or not to open a season, did the state conduct a study to determine how large a lion population actually exists in OK?

Congrats to Rooster Feather and all in OKLAHOMA!!

"RF" mentioned a lion rifle ...... barring restrictions on the kind of gun ... "it don't take much"!!

A good .22 CF long gun (.222 Rem. and above) is very adequate ..... even prefered!

Lions are thin skinned and they generally get real involved with their hits giving you an opportunity for a follow up shot if it's needed ..... not always but often they will get very self absorbed in their (new) problem for a few moments.

Expect a cautious season and PETA getting all bent out of shape!

Is that bunny hugger dust trailing off to Oklahoma????

Three 44s

I talked to the local game warden today and he informed me that the bill doesn't make a season but only gives the wildlife department the authority to do so as they see fit. I asked him if he thought a season would be allowed, and his response was "we'll have to wait to see."

Radd 4 I beleive you, and hope you will be able to purchase a tag soon , but you can take pictures and share with us that havent had the luck to see one.
that is the way i read the bill to, it just gives ODWC the authority to do so if they choose ,

there has been some bear (not many) come in to towns and been trapped and returned to wilderness area.
some of them have been trapped tagged and wore a tracking collar for so long they almost broke to lead LOL> ODWC biologist have had a bear project ongoing for several years in south east OK..

as for a lion study in OK. the only one i know of is by reported sightings to ODWC you see (1) tell them they say #1 some one else sees (2) that makes #3 and so on.
if anyone knows of a ongoing study or method of determining the population of lions in Oklahoma by anyone please let me know.

We have had a Bear program here in AR. for several years &
we have a fairly long season. They have a set quota they want taken each year, I don't have it in front of me but if I remember right it will range from 300-400 per season. In the later part of the season, you call a toll free number
to see if the quota has been met before you hunt. We have alot of Bears in the Mountains in Western AR. & no doubt some of these will bleed off into Oklahoma & they have in Southern MO. for sure.
AR. G&F has been in denial about Cougars for years but are
slowly facing the facts.

Just for the record, the Oklahoma legislature only has control over Quail and Squirrel season. This bill makes it legal, however, the ODWC has to adopt the measures, which, will be a LONG ways out. I have been told on good authority that IF, and WHEN there is a season, on the Mountain Lion and River Otter, then the carcass will have to be surrendered to the ODWC for study. One may keep the pelts, but carcass will be confiscated. Also, bear season has yet to have enough data to even be considered.
