Oklahoma Panhandle Weekend

Last Friday at midnight Ben the GSP and I hauled tail back to the Oklahoma Panhandle for another round of pheasant hunting. Were we in for a suprise when we crossed the state line, ice and snow. The temp dropped ten degrees when we hit Stratford and it never came back up. Made it in to Guymon at 6am in time for a little breakfast and see what the weather was going to do to us. Made it out to the family place around 7:30 and started hunting at 7:40. We were limited out at 8:40. The temp had gone to 24 and was snowing by this time. The birds were also holding tight which helped since just the two of us were hunting.

Went down to the house cleaned birds, made a few phone calls to get a couple of buds out for an afternoon hunt and get a long needed nap. I had been up for 30+hours. We head back out at 3pm. Conditions = cold 22 and snowing. Have to love it. By 4:15pm we are limited out with 6 birds. It doesn't get much better than this.

We hunt Sunday with about the same results, quick limits. Ben even got his own limit this day. We had two roosters that wouldn't flush when I gave Ben the command. He finally went in the grass after them and came out with a big rooster two different times.
I also nailed my first double. I've been a little leary of shooting two because of the deep grass and the chance of loosing a bird. It worked out perfect. As soon as I shot the 1st bird the 2nd flushed and Ben keyed on him when he went down. I went to the 1st and Ben fetched the 2nd. Best of all I did it with my Citori 16ga O/U. This has turned in to one fine pheasant gun. The GSP and I were on our game. Here are some pics of Ben and a few of the weekends hunts.

Bob,I'm heading north of Guymon up by Hough on Thursday and Friday.Did you get most your birds in CRP or small corners around crops or what?THanks

All my birds are in CRP. Get ready for lots of shooting and if you are hunting CRP you better have a dog. It is super tall and thick this year, easy to lose a bird. I have lost over a dozen even while using Labs and a GSP. Now that there is some moisture our dogs can find the birds alot better.

Bob,thanks for the invite.I'd love to give it a whirl but I don't know if I'll get the oppertunity again this year.Send me a PM before you go and I'll see what I can do.
We hunted one day north of Guymon and got two birds.I had three youngsters that had numerous oppertunities and we saw a good bunch of birds. The area we hunted had been hit hard, the birds were wild, wild. The 70 degree day didn't help alot either.
Merry CHristmas to you.

It will probably be towards the end of Jan. when I go back. Just depends on the weather that time of year. Maybe we can hit a cold snowy day like I had last weekend. That was a blast. Shoot me an e mail,,,,
