Oklahoma prairie dog safari

Just got back from our annual prairie dog trip and had a blast. We have been going to the panhandle of Ok for almost 40 years and this was a good one. I haven’t counted the ammo used but I have a gallon bucket of 223 brass and 400 more in boxes. We hunted on all private land mostly on one ranch.Shots ranged from 80 yards to as far as you can see, used mostly 55 grain soft points from midsouth but this year also tried some 40 grain z-max with a case full of Benchmark and they are awesome, shoot like a laser with spectacular impact. I will have more of those next year!

Your trip sounds like a blast. The majority of my prairie dog shooting is done with 40's at very high velocity, they are as close to a laser as we can get in a .223.

You are correct, most of us know what prairie dogs look like. However, I guess I should have reminded you that many of us on this Board have not seen the lay of the land in the Oklahoma panhandle, nor have we seen your rifles, hunting vehicles or photos of you and your partners in crime. So if you have some photos of the aforementioned items, PLEASE post them.

I never thought about taking pictures, I guess I should’ve thought about taking some, but I’m not that technically inclined.By the time I got ready the shooting would be over.

It's not very pretty country especially in a dog town. Cactus, short grass and a yucca plant here and there. If there's a tree sticking up somewhere you'll know exactly where it is because you can see for miles. Rattlesnakes, burrowing owls, cottontails and
prairie dogs runnin amuck. That's about the best picture I can paint for anyone that's never been out here.

I got back from the panhandle a couple weeks ago. This was our first time shooting pdogs....man oh man that is a lot of fun!!!
I used a healthy case full of Benchmark and 53gr Vmax in 2 different 223 rifles. I hope I get the chance to go back and shoot more some day.
