Olympic AR-15 .223 scratches bullets while feeding..

I recently acquired a used AR15.

I noticed that feeding a round from the magazine is lightly scratching the copper portion of the bullet.

Using Zombie Max .223..

When Coyote hunting and not shooting a round, a bullet can be loaded muliple times which is creating more scratches..

Is this common? Makes me think that bullet flight could be slightly effected.. thx

a little more back ground...

I believe its the feed ramp that is producing the scratches..

I am curious if this is common? Do folks rework the feed ramp? thx.

My R25 .243 Win, was the worst at leaving scratches, but after several hundred rounds I think the ramps have smoothed up a bit. I don`t think it`s all that uncommon,(I think I`ve seen scratches on the bullets from all of my AR`s) and IME, it doesn`t affect accuracy.
I was told I could send my rifle in to have the ramps smoothed up, but I didn`t feel it was worth the trouble, knowing that `eventually` the issue would `work itself out`..lol
I think it was also mentioned, someone used a rubber/abrasive bullet shaped cratex to smooth them.

I would say your feed ramps are scratching the round. You can smoothe out the sharp edges but it would require removing the barrel which requires a barrel wrench and upper receiver vice block. I doubt that scratches, unless gouged severely would significantly affect bullet flight.

Might look at your magazine as well. The top of the magazine that holds the rounds in the magazine might need to be polished. Feed ramp can be polished as well. You must be very careful when doing this but it does fix the problem.

Control feed a round in real slow and watch for all the places that the brass touches the feed system, then with index in mind, remove the cartridge and see if the scratches are on the top, bottom, sides or wherever. Then look for the parts that touched the case in those areas. It is not hard to track down, polish and correct.
