One darn tough crow!

Got home this morning and could hear a bunch of crows making a fuss out in the tree line behind my house. So I decided to see what the big deal was about crow hunting. I grabbed my Primos ki-yi and my 12 guage and went to the back fence and began calling. About a milli-second later I had about 8 million crows circling me in the air, I picked out my victim and let him have a mouthful of #4 shot. Feathers flew everywhere and that crow looked as if he was coming down in flames only to regain his wing and keep on flying away and disappeared back into the woods.

Are they usually that tough? I have sniped them over a bone yard while coyote hunting with a .308 before and they ofcourse never take to the air when hit with a 168gr. SMK, but I certainly never expected one to survive an instant being hit with #4's from 15 yards.

OK, now I feel better. I have been at the crow game for only a short time (about 2 months), but have had the same experience with #4 birdshot on 2 different occasions when I started... which is NOT OK in my opinion, I know that they are crows, and some would call them trash birds, but they are extremely smart, and no animal deserves to fly off, suffer, and die. I wanted something to stop them in their tracks. Some of the members on this forum recommended 6 or 7 1/2 shot, and it works like a charm. Seems the denser pattern transfers more shock to their body, with instant kills. Just my two cents!

Never shot them with a shot gun, but my 223 68. and 75amax seem to dispatch quite quickley out on my sisters farm, we always joke about hunting crows you have to dress in black, play dead and just mabe get a shot at one.

Sometimes tougher!! I've seen crows plow head 1st onto the frozen tundra just to get up & try to sneak away!! My Brother & I both hit one once & it still had it's wings under it for over 300yds. We found it across the road & in another farmers field dead.

I've used 3" #2 shot on one occasion, and it worked great!
I usually sneak around our deer lease and shoot long range with the .223. I guess I'm kind of sick, but, I like to watch them explode.

I'll second the motion - I'd rather shoot crows with a high velocity rifle than any other kind of shooting.

I shot one with the 17hmr at 100yards(give or take). Knocked him right off his feet they he got up, started flying only to nose dive into the ground. Gets up again then starts hopping off towards my pond. I followed him and found him hiding in the cattails. I could see a hole threw him the size of a quarter between his legs. Had to feed him another to keep him down lol.

they are very smart birds though, usually can't fool the same bird twice.

Yeah, for me it's the .257weatherby mag and sometimes the .270win (that shot the crow in the pic above). Gotta love the feathers!

People I have been talking to have told me its illegal to shoot crows, I'm assuming this is wrong? I've passed up some nice shots in Wyoming thinking it would be breaking the law.

ASK THE GAME & FISH

11/3/2006

Q. "Are there any regulations for hunting crows?"

A. Yes. In Wyoming, the crow season is Nov. 1 - Feb. 28. They may be taken only by firearms, bow and arrow or falconry. There is no bag limit and no license is required. This season applies to crows only. A similar species, the raven, is protected. On page 5 of the current late Migratory Game Bird Regulations is a drawing of a crow and a raven to help hunters distinguish between the two species.

I'm hoping to do just that with a new Chipmunk Silhouette/Hunter pistol in 17 HMR. I'm gonna put this scope on top and see just how far out i can pop 1--http://www.rapidreticle.com/22lr3-9x32.htm

pretty interesting glen, i wonder if anyone has ever hunted crows with a falcon/hawk, and i wonder if they did, if a falcon nailed a crow, then if the falcon would get mobbed and get his arse kicked by the crows?!

They can be very tough. Once I hit one square in the belly with a load of 6's as he passed directly overhead and saw a puff of white under-down feathers burst out. I knew that was a solid hit from experience and expectantly waited for him to fold and crash. He just kept flapping along.
Another time I caught one in the side with 7 1/2's as he came in low and close. Saw the hit and as I swung around as he passed I expected him to fold and crash. He just set his wings out locked and glided down the gentle downhill slope about 200 yards into the woods. Looked all over for him and never found him.

On the other hand...once I took a long high shot at one and he just kept flapping along unperturbed. About six seconds later he just gave up and folded.

Man, I loved it when they folded and came arcing down beak-first right into a tree trunk. What a lovely sound, and you just knew that they knew what they were about to hit but couldn't do a thing about it!

Yes, I am sick.
It is a crow thing.
You cannot know this thing without also being sick.
