We did our own myth busters episode on this one after hearing and old guy talk of repurposing military ball ammo for deer. We used an mosin nagant and 5 different runs of surplus ammo the oldest was 1954 Bulgarian heavy ball. We used a drill press and a vise to mill off the tips and drill them out. pulled apart about 150 bullets total got 10 that had complete jackets no hole in the back. fired about 30 total rounds. Everything left the barrel every time. We had fragmentation some key holes some we don't even know where they went. But those 10 with the true fmjs shot very well. So I say it's plausible. O the fun you can have with a 60 dollar rifle, 15 bucks worth of surplus ammo and a 30ft length of paracord.
