we got off to a good start this morning. On the first stand we called in a jake first and then two 2 year olds. Michelle was supposed to shoot one but she's pickier than I am. My first bird of the day had 3/4 inch spurs and an 8 inch beard. We moved to a wheat field where I've seen a really thick bearded bird several times. There were 5 gobblers and 4 hens on the field. We got set up and called forever. One bird that was never really with the rest finally pealed away and came a half mile to us. He was finally in range and when Michelle squeezed the trigger on her 12 ga. nothing happened! She pumped another round in, a round of Dead Coyote, and the gobbler circled around behind us. Michelle turned around and made a great 20 yard shot. Down he went! He had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. The other birds in the field were still there but alert. I continued calling and they relaxed a bit and followed the hens to the far end of the tree line we were on. We decided to move to the other side and down a few yards, but in the process the cattle spooked and ran right through the middle of the birds, one gobbler flew away, the hens went one way and the gobblers our way! We got busy calling as the 3 gobblers came our way. We were going to count down and shoot. Michelle was on the biggest bird and I waited for the other two to line up. I thought Michelle said now, but she said something else. Anyway I shot and my two dropped, she didn't shoot! She said : what the heck happened I didn't shoot! One of my birds had 3/4 inch spurs and a 9 inch beard, the other had 7/8 inch spurs and 2 beards 1 was 10 inches and the little wispy one was 5 inches.
My season is 3/4's over! Michelle says she's holding out for the big boy we've been seeing. Picky woman!
The place we hunted has a long history. There are remnants of an old farmhouse and along the road to it there is an old cowboy grave. During the Great Depression the landowner hired around 100 hands to build rock retaining walls to stop erosion. The land is also covered in old rock buildings. I'm not sure what they were for other than housing and barns. The rock building behind us is one of those buildings.
