Opinions on Elec. Earmuffs.

Looking to get a set of Electronic Earmuffs for this summers shooting season.
Like to hear some opinions on these, mainly ones in the $150.00 or less price range.
Also, your opinions on, Standard Band Type, or Behind the Head style.
Thanks.

Greyhunter, I just read some reviews on Midway usa and seems that most share the same opinion as you. All seemed pleased with them. I'll probably try a set of these in a few weeks. Thanks.

I had some Walker's muffs for a while, but hated them because of all the static noise. A little breeze and I couldn't hear anything.

I have Peltor Tactial 6 and Tactical 7 muffs. The 6's are nice bc they fold down to almost nothing. I end up wearing the 7's almost all the time even though they take up more room in my day pack (yes, I wear them when hunting) for the simple reason that they have a bit more room inside the cups. I have big ears that stick out a bit & the 6's get uncomfortable after an hour or so.

I've used Peltors for quite a few years in competitions as they allow me to hear range commands, but recover from the 'shut down' mode faster than most..

Because of the work environment and company policies I have the opportunity to use many different types of attenuating hearing protection. This includes models from Peltor, Howard Leight, Helberg, Walker and some off brand stuff. I also own many types.

Oddly enough for shooting I bought a pair of the cheapy ones from Midway that they had for $24. They are the most comfortable and work as well as any of the rest. They also take AA batteries which is a big plus.

I would assume you are refering to the Caldwell muffs, I bought a pair of them because they were affordable, read cheap, and like them a lot so far but haven't used them a lot yet.

How about the "Behind the head" type band ? I can use the regular type without them bumping the stock, but was wondering if the behind the head type might rub the stock near the buttpad, they look like they stay kinda tight to the neck so maybe not. I'll probably just go with the overhead type, or try some on at shop.

I had never used electronic muffs and bought 2 pair of these. One for me and one for the wife. We did some shooting this last weekend and I was extremely pleased with these. I picked them up for $50 each.

I bought a pair of those Caldwell low-profiles from Midway, too. I'm very happy with them, best deal I ever got on hearing protection. I got the over-the-head model, but it doesn't interfere with shooting my AR or 10-22. Yeah, if the wind's blowing decently you can hear the rumble from the mics, but you can always turn the volume down and just use them as standard muffs. I think they probably all have that problem, unless you get into noise-cancelling designs.

I didn't expect much from the Caldwells (for $25) but I'm impressed after using them for a year. They're pretty comfy and work great (stereo, too).

I have the peltor 6s behind the head model. Love them.... I do put them on upside-down while wearing a ball cap. The wire frame goes over the plastic adjuster band on the back of the cap. It helps keep the cap on in the wind, and just feels better anyway. I think you can get an idea from the pic.

They are a good way to go, if you wear a broad-brimmed hat or cowboy hat. My wife is the model....

I really like the Howard Leights. I've never tried the Peltors, but would like to see how they stack againt the HL's.

I don't know what model of Caldwells you guys are using, but a friend had a pair and they sucked...bad. Maybe they changed them or they were a different model.

I wear a Boonie hat sometimes so that may be a good trick when I have it on. Still not sure, might just go with the overhead type, I don't need the shade of the Boonie at the range usually, and don't shoot enough while Groundhoggin' around here, but when I finally hit a P-dog town, I'm sure they'll be handy then. Thanks.

The cheap ones I got from Midway were on special for less than $30. They are low profile to allow for better head position at the stock. They actually compare well with my Peltor Tactical Pros when it comes to noise enhancement/reduction and the batteries last longer. The Tac Pros were $169. Both take AA batteries which is a big plus. Some of the other models take oddball batteries that don't last long.

Yeah, I guess what batteries are used could be an issue. Tactical 6 uses 4 AAA, Tactical 7 uses one 9 volt. Commonly available & I've found battery life on both to be very good.

It has for me. Out on the pasture 30 miles from the nearest store, shooting with a small group and you find out the last person who used your hearing protection left them turned on. Then you open the side up and remember this pair takes those pill batteries that are not sold in every little mom and pop store across the prairie and if they have them they are $10. I use attenuating hearing protection so much when shooting I become dependent on them.
