Orange for predators in Pa

Well, I guess I do have some good news, The Pa Game Commission had its Jan meeting and although the orange issue will go into effect July 1st with the new license yr, I just got off the phone with the Game Comm. Deputy Exec. Director Mike Schmit and I was told that atleast 4 people representing Pa furtakers were there to talk about this subject and I was told that the board of Commissioners has already started the process of ammending this law and the new ammendments will be voted on at the april commission meeting. So until then I would hope that everyone Resident and Non would give them a Call, those in Pa call your regional office and or you particular commissioner and let them know what you think, if not a resident call the headquarters in Harrisburg. If we don't let them know the truth about this then I guess we had all just better keep our orange out all year long. If anyone need any info on this or ANY contact numbers let me know the Harrisburg number is.... (717) 787-4250 If you need a number other than that just mail me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, I hope what you say is correct. Personally, I will not take anything for granted till I see it first hand.

Actually, letters are better received. You may have a hard time reaching a comissioner on the phone since they do not all visit the office on a daily basis. Here is a letter I drafted and posted on a different board. I hope everyone can take the time and send one out. Just fill in the blanks and address the envelope. The best sucess is if a letter is sent to each comissioner.

One of the most important things that we need to do is to write your commissioner. These are the ones that make the rules.
Here is a list of who your comissioners are:
Northwest Region: Robert Gilford
Southwest Region: Roxane Palone
Northcentral Region: Russel Schleiden
Southcentral Region: Samuel Dunkle
Northeast Region: John Riley
Southeastern Region : Gregory J. Isabella

You will adress the envelope to:
Pennsylvania Game Commission
2001 Elmerton Avenue
Harrisburg, PA 17110-9797
Attention: Your Respective Commissioner

Here is a sample leter I typed up. Feel free to copy it, add to it,change it any way you see fit, but by all means, take the time to send it. It will take 5 min. of your time to do this. All you have to do is copy it to your word program, type in your name and respective commissioner.

If you do not, then we will have to live with these rules!Remember the saying "SQUEAKEY WHEEL GETS THE OIL!"

Dear You’re Commissioner

I would like to express my dis- satisfaction with your new changes regarding fluorescent orange. On October 7, 2003, your office released Release #93-03 . In this provision, there is absolutely no consideration given to the predator hunter! Under these regulations, the predator hunter is required to wear florescent orange at all times. This new regulation will severely hinder the predator hunter! The art of stealth combined with camouflage is two of the predator hunter’s main tactics. By adding the rules of wearing fluorescent orange, the predator hunter is severely handicapped during his hunt.

Statistics show that predator hunting is one of the safest groups of hunters. Predator hunting accidents account for less than 1 % of all reported incidents. Other hunted species, namely turkey, account for far more incidents. Yet, consideration is given to that interest group.

I ask you at your next meeting in April to take into consideration the predator hunter. Again, fluorescent orange severely hinders the predator hunter!

I look forward to seeing you at your April meeting.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

--------------------------------------------------

Thanks to everyone who helps w/this endevor!!

PS Whtnite, 2 of the speakers were PPHA members. The 3rd. was a rep from the federation. I am not sure if the 4th speaker was affilated w/a group. So I gues it is fair to say he spoke for everyone who could not make it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Edited for current info

Actually Sam, there is one thing I would like to clear up, in your post you stated that the commissioners make the rules, they don't, these rules are brought into effect by your local rep. so as well as any letters you might want to send to the commissioners you should also send a copy rewritten to your local Rep. since they will have the final vote, as it stands right now, these orange rules are a done deal, so every letter to the Pa Game Commission will help, but I as an officer for them would like to say that the man I talked to today is not one of the pencil pushing guys who just try to answer a question as best they can then blow you off onto someone else, I would hope that would mean something. I have no reason to not believe him, but I am still Going to write my own letter to each of the commissioners and to the Harrisburg office and send them out.

What is wrong with wearing blaze orange? I wear a blaze orange hat and blaze orange back pack. I kill coyotes. K-9 don't see orange the way we do. I'm not trying to start a fight. If you guy's in PA. want to hunt with no orange so be it. I'll stay safe, and still kill coyotes.

I thought the blaze orange requirement was only for when a firearms deer season was underway, and that did not include the late season flintlock hunt.

If you are out there hiding in the bushes during gun season for deer, you are probably going to get shot at. Sad, but a fact of modern life in the woods. It was safer I think in the 1700's when all you had to worry about was the injuns.

Gentlemen,

The issue here is not safty. During the big game seasons, deer, bear, etc. yes, orange is required. You would have to be a complete idiot not to wear it. Actually, I do not hunt during the big game seasons. Just too busy.

The problem is that the comission inacted this to curb poaching. Too many hunters are saying they are hunting coyote and poaching deer & bear. Now, is wearing orange going to stop someone from poaching???
It truely has nothing to do w/saftey.

Rav, I don't have all the exact wording here with me right now, but what it boils down to is that the new law states that anyone hunting anything except waterfowl and doves, crows, must wear 250" fl orange head chest & back combined. I personallt talked to the Dep. Exec. Director and he assured me that this was brought up and addressed at the meeting last week and they are already working on new wording for the law that will be voted on in april. This wording would allow all furtakers to continue to wear full camo EXCEPT when hunting during the reg deer and bear seasons, the way it is worded now for those seasons is when hunting predators you must wear orange from 2 hrs before sunrise to 2hrs after sunset, only during deer and bear season.

Can I ask why you are against wearing blaze orange while predator hunting? I don't want a fight.. I just want to understand your point.

All my orange is a solid block of orange, And predators most definitly can see the blockey outline, maybe orange camo would be alright, but i dont like to silouette myself... just my thoughts- Justin

I can only speak for myself, but I DO NOT like to be told how to dress or what colors to wear. I do not feel unsafe when in full camo. I managed to survive being intentionally shot at while in the US Army, so I guess I can survive now. Besides I hate saftey nazis trying to dictate to me how to live my life. I firmly believe in freedom. Barry

I'm glad to see you learned the finer points in keeping your butt low and your head down. Thanks for adding your views.. We have to wear it in Michigan. So I do..Good luck on your fight. I hope whats best for the sport happens.

Lets not forget about this issue. Just cause the Jan. meeting has come & gone, lets not forget about it. There is another meeting in April.
Thanks to all who contributed! For those who have not, please take a few min. and make a contribution. Remember, this has nothing to do w/saftey. It is all about law inforcement!
Lets get F/O for predator hunters back on the exemption list!
Thanks
