In a rifle that the cartridge OAL is restricted because of Magazine length. Do others reload cartridges to reliably function in the magazine. Then just stick to that measurement even when switching to a bullets? What I'm trying to ask is a bullet that is shorter then the ogive would be longer. You get what I'm asking. I don't like my description. Here is a real life example Nosler ballistic tips are a long bullet. If I load them to magazine function there is a good jump to lands. The same weight bullet in a Midway dogtown hollow point is considerably shorter and could be refigured to be closer to lands and still function in the magazine.
 
I'm a little lost from your description....Measuring from the base of the brass to the ogive will be shorter if the bullet itself is shorter...Since you are restricted to magazine length, you can use shorter brass and the same bullet will have a longer jump to the lands, but a shorter overall length to the tip when loaded...

The maximum trim length listed is the maximum length of the brass that will work in chamber, normally...Your seating depth of the bullet that will fit in the magazine will give different measurements to the ogive, depending on the configuration of the bullet...Ballistic tips will usually measure a shorter ogive than a soft point, even though the bullet weights may be the same...

I think I may be explaining the same thing that you describe, just differently...
 
Loading to mag length is what I do.
Now that said not all bullets will feed at magazine length especially the jacketed HP bullets. In my .243 I have to seat the 85g Sierra Game King HP bullets deeper since they jamb into the receiver when they pop up out of the magazine.
 
I will try again. If I measure and load C.O.A.L from case base to tip of bullet to fit magazine of my CZ527 223. The Ogive measurement will be longer or shorter from case base depending on bullet make. So the bullet measurement from lands to ogive will change. On my CZ the magazine is short enough that my 55 gr. bal. tips have quite a jump from. But a Midway Hollow point will fit in the magazine and the ogive can be loaded up to lands. This is something I haven't ran into with rem 700 or of course TC contenders, Ruger #1. I have always started a C.O.A.L about 7 thou back and changed for accuracy. I guess with the CZ I can do the same thing with shorter bullets but with a longer bullet I am limited. I haven't seen this to be a problem but its a change from what I am use to. I guess this is the same in my AR. I loaded a bal tip to a workable length and it shot like a laser so I never tried anything else. and I didn't feel like messing with it.
 
Aaaaand im still confused as to what youre asking. Coal and measuring to the ogive are separate things. If the mag allows 2 inches, you cant load longer regardless of bullet profile. Jump doesnt matter if youre loading to essentially a single shot.
