Particpation Trophies For All

This is not a new phenomenon. Over 20 yrs ago, for 2 years I fought this mentality while coaching my son's teeball team. Even 20+ years ago, no winners, no losers, you cannot keep score, everyone gets a trophy crap. The frustration was overwhelming. There is only one way children can build self esteem and that is through achievement.

Cole Middle School Cancels Honors Night

The notice was sent to parents over the weekend in an e-mail signed by School Principal Alexis Meyer and Assistant Principal Dan Seger.

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. —Citing concerns about the "exclusive nature" of the annual honors night at Archie R. Cole Middle School, school officials have decided to scrap the tradition.

Instead, students who would normally be recognized at the annual spring tradition will be honored during team-based recognition ceremonies and graduation.

The notice was sent to parents over the weekend in an e-mail signed by School Principal Alexis Meyer and Assistant Principal Dan Seger.

"Members of the school community have long expressed concerns related to the exclusive nature of Honors Night," the email stated.

By having the recognition ceremonies during team-based ceremonies, it will "afford us the opportunity to celebrate the individual and collective success of all students and their effort, progress and excellence."

At the same time, Cole varsity athletes will get medals and trophies at an after school ceremony.

One parent told ABC6 that he's not happy with the change.

“How else are they suppose to learn coping skills, not just based on success, but relative failure, it might not be failure, but understand what it takes to achieve high levels,” said parent Joe Kosloski.

Others share my belief:

If there's no incentive to be excellent, why try? That's where this crap is headed. Liberals hate exceptionalism, so they find every opportunity to do away with celebrating it. Let's all just be mediocre as we drift off into the sunset of this nation.

This parent's got it!

Want to hear a story? Here goes. I'm 5'6" tall. In HS, out of 15 hurdlers (track) I was one of 4 varsity. I was also a varsity high jumper. High hurdles come up to about my sternum and I won plenty of 4a races, placed in about 80% of the rest. My best high jump was 6'4". I never once asked to either have the hurdles lowered, or everyone elses raised so they were at the same relative height to the other racers.

I recall once before a race the guy in the next lane was about 6'4". He could step over them without breaking stride. "It must suck to be so short" were his words. That particular race, I won, he took 4th. So 110 yards later, "It must suck, to be so [beeep] slow" was the reply.

Point being, we're not all the same. And if we are some will always try harder than others. And some will have natural gifts that those around them can't share. It's genetics. Tying bricks around the ankles of good swimmers so they struggle just as much as bad swimmers isn't the way to make people better. It's a guaranteed way to make worse people in larger numbers.

Kids that are exceptional should be praised for being exceptional, not beaten down so they are "equal" to the dumbest kids in their class.

If you're kid is dumb as a bag of diapers, accept it. Don't burden everyone else in the world with his problems.

Things have changed a lot. Used to be you did not get praise for doing what you were supposed to do anyway. When you went beyond your duty you might get noticed, maybe a slap on the back.

Does that mean that I can win the lottery without buying a ticket. After all, it ain't fair that some guy bought a ticket and had his number drawn and won all those millions. I demand my fair share.

The people that are doing away with the honor nights and making sure that everyone is getting an award so they don't feel left out are probably the same kids that feel they were left out or did not get their fair share. So now that they are in power "THEY ARE" going to change things. And they sure are they are changing our kids in to big whimps. And when they grow up they think that they are entitled to getting the latest and greatest cell phone, a car when they turn 16, a college education. And while they are there they get drunk every weekend and sometimes twice during the week. They also need to go on spring break. And when they get the college degree then they are entitled to a $75-100,000.00 job. They are also entitled to a new car and new home right out of college. All because they are a college graduate with no work back ground. And when they are offered a job that is only $35-50,000.00 they fell it below them to take it. They don't see that it takes hard work to get ahead.
