Howdy all!

New member here!

First of all, I'd like to blame those dogbegone guys. Your damned video has sparked my interest in varmint hunting.

Soon to be a new shooter... as soon as I jump though the Canadian red tape. I've finished my Canadian Firearms Safety, and Hunter Safety coarses. Now I just have to wait the 28-60 days for the PAL application to go though ( we can't even buy .22 carts here without that ).

Anyways, where are the large PD towns in Saskatchewan? I'm interested in mapping a few locations. Any pointers? Anybody know if the gopher derby is being run this year???

....I know, tons of questions. But I am green as hell. Any help would be cool as hell. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Welcome to the board. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Where are you from? The derby is cancelled this year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hey,

I'm from Regina. You must be a Saskatoonite. Did they fold under the pressure from all the peta freaks? That sucks if it was cancelled. I was looking forward to giving it a try.

Regina!!! Well we'll let it slide because you're new. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm from Hanna Alberta. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think they caved, but here's the explanation.

Saskatchewan's gophers can run freely this year knowing the bounty on them has been lifted. Saskatoon Wildlife Federation's annual gopher derby, aimed at controlling the gopher population, has been cancelled this year.

"I don't think the conditions this year merit it," said Len Jabush, business manager for the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation and organizer of the derby.

Heavier rain in 2003 resulted in more vegetation, giving predators more places to hide and hunt the rodents, Jabush said. And heavier snowfall this winter meant more runoff when the weather warmed in spring, filling underground dens and drowning more gophers than in the past drought-stricken years.

The controversial derby, which started in 2002 and ran again last year, sparked tremendous criticism from animal rights groups in Canada and the U.S. The derby was termed "barbaric" by activists. More than 61,000 gopher tails were collected in 2002 and 40,400 in 2003.

Lol,

Thanks.

I don't think I need a bounty. I'll just have to volunteer my services for this year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
