Peep Sight

Well Guys as we get older our eyes arnt as good as they were. I been using Scopes for several years because using Iron Sights ether the back sight is in focus and the front and Target are Fuzzy or visa versa. Been thinking about a Peep Sight on my 10-22 or my Rem.580. Never shot with them so is it easier with old eyes to shoot with a Peep?? If so do you have any recomendations?? Thanks Jeff

It happens to most of us!!

Have you tried the Lyman Hawkeye? I use it, and it cleared up most of the open iron sight fuzziness for me. It's about $20 or so. I have a friend that uses the Hawkeye when shooting his compound bow, in addition to the already-installed peep sight on the string. The only complaint that we both have is that it doesn't let in enough light through in low-light conditions.

I use peep sights without a problem. Vernier tang sight on a Sharps repro, and the Thompson Center peeps on muzzleloaders. I've heard (but never tried) that one can drill out the peep hole, creating progressively larger holes until the fuzziness disappears.

Another option for you may be one of the red dot sights that use an illuminated dot.

An GOOD aperture sight installed CORRECTLY (closer to the eye) along with a good front sight to compliment the rear makes a HUGE difference for us with aging eyes.

I recently had the pleasure of shooting a .22rf rifle with GOOD peeps on it. I'd tell you a story about the groups I was able to get shooting at a 100yd target with that rifle but you would say I was BS'n ya. And I wouldn't blame you because I wouldn't of believed it if I hadn't done it. My groups were beyond amazing, but you shoulda seen what the guy that owned the rifle could do!

Sorry I can't be of much help with recomendations on what to get. But if you decide go down the aperture road, I would urge you to do a bunch of extensive research, seek and soak up all the info you can manage to handle. Do it right and get the best you can right from the get go. I guarantee you won't be disappointed in a good peep set up..

I think a peep is much easier to use. And you can also get different apertures for lower light situation. They also make a twilight peep, and you can completely take the peep out for a "ghost ring" peep. So there are plenty of options. Below is an example of a target style peep sight for a 22 rifle. Excellent suggestion! I'm starting to see more of us older guys (whose eyes aren't what they used to be) putting the Lyman peep sight on a variety of rifles, especially lever actions rifles. I've been sticking with scopes on my long guns because of the need for accuracy in target shooting. But I'm considering taking the scope off my Marlin 330C and putting on a Lyman peep sight that I've been told (and have seen) they work very well given the distance you'd probably be using a lever action rifle for.

Williams, Lyman, XS-Sight Systems, Skinner, ect. all offer hunting/casual target type peep sights that are excellent. Aperture sights are head and shoulders above open irons sights.

Here is an old competitive shooter's trick to maximize the clarity of sight picture w/aperature rear sights. In use, the aperature is closed down to sharpen the front sight, being careful not to restrict too much as this causes eye strain. Any fixed aperature sight can be more/less effective depending upon available light and the merit is the answer to that problem.

Merit Disk

Did a quick search and did not find it, but Merit used to make a smaller dia. disc for hunting application. Feel sure it is still available but might have to go to Merit's web page to find it.

As has been stated, aperature sights are the over 50 (age) crowd's best friend when it comes to iron sights.

Thanks Guys
I have been thinking about this for some time. It would make it lighter. Something new to do, takes more Skill than a Scope. If I could get one for my Rem 580 it would give me a longer sight plane. My 580 was my goto Squirrel gun/and still is. Thanks Jeff

I put a Williams WGRS and a white bead on my 10-22, and cannot pry it from my kid's hands. (They are around 30 now, and have had it since they were about 20!!!)

Good Luck, I perfer kill over skill, and I have alot of skill with my scoped 10/22. Things die at yardages similar to deer rifles.

The term good luck is not meant to be smartassed, it's genuine.

The only rifle I have a peep on is my T/C Omega .50 BP. Its a Williams WGRS and I love it. I like iron sights and only have two of my rifles scoped and a Red Dot on my bunny/tree rat killing Remington 597. I have 5 other rifles and all are with iron sights. None of my shotguns have scopes or a Red Dot. My eyes are beginning to age and I do have a little trouble focusing on my rear sight. Not with the peep though, my eye automaticly centers the front sight through the aperature and I dont even know the peep is there. When my eyes get too bad, I will replace all my rear sights with a peep. JMO.
