Penetration test for a substitute to Dead Coyote Shot Shells. Photos

4 buck is 30-40 yds top, the shot you tested will outpreform it double, the new winchester coyote load rocks too.

Finally the voice of reason on #4 buck. I've heard so many people talking about it like it was the end all of coyote hunting loads. It's not.

I think a lot of the long shots people talk about with shotguns is wishful thinking. I think the max distance with a shotgun is likely somewhere around 60 or 65 yards with the premium loads IF your shotgun patterns them good. And, it's helpful at that range if you have the critter in wide open spaces so you can follow up with more shots if needed.

I hunt with a shotgun a lot at night and it's effective out to those ranges under those conditions.

#4 Buck, 3", 12 gauge. This was shot at 40 yards. As far as actually shooting at coyotes in the field goes, I feel that this is the extreme distance that I'd try. I'd much prefer 30 yards and closer. I have a rifle for shooting at coyotes that are over 40 yards away. That said, if I get my hands on some HD, I'll be back at the patterning board.

Al, what are the specks on the Winchester loads? Did you help develop it?

What is your max range with the shotgun?

Just gone done with Operation Predator 5 I pick up Sunday. Very good DVD! I like the shots of Utah at the start. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

i often carry both rifle and shotgun to stands
(in fact i am an ardent advocate of shot guns up close)
but i have trouble understanding extended/maximum possible lethal ranges
i know coyotes are dead @ 50 yds or less with the shotgun and that beyond that i am going to use the rifle
i have no need to test my shotgun to 70 yds
the cost difference of shooting a 3 dollar load and maybe two loads at 70 yds vs bullets would be stupid
why do we use shotguns is the question
because you point not aim, no need to find em in a scope, fast swinging and large coverage in that situation, snap shooting

just an opinion

What shells are junk? And you know that how? Thanks in advance for a more detailed explanation. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Guerowolf,
The reason for wanting an extreme range shot load is that I think that I should have a round that will kill anything I point it at out to like 150 yards, that I don't have to aim too well (I am not all that good of a rifle shot). Just kidding.
I guess there are not too many reasons to want a 60-70 yard shot shell. The only reason I can come up with is the few times you call in a double and shoot one close with the shot gun, there are times you don't have time to switch back to a rifle as the other is buggin out. I also think it is good to know the maximum range for any weapon, even though you might not intend to shoot it that far. It is also fun to play around with. Just like guys love to work up long range rifle rounds. I am having a good time just imagining the possibilities.

Welcome to the Predator Masters Yoteinc. Like GC said, what shells are you referring to?

Very interesting and thanks for sharing Salemdogger!! I recently patterened some 3" Dead Coyote and was amazed that I got all the pellets in a 30" circle, it is the best pattern I've ever shot and was very pleased to say the least. Now I need some real world testing, lol!!

good reasoning salem
(the double)
that's what my partner's for (lol)
been using a shotgun for years and use carlson's choke and dead coyote loads with great success
i just think it would be "luck" that consistently DRT'ed coyotes at 70 yds with any shot load
(especially if you had already killed one and you were trying to score a double when the second has probably shifted gears)
and i would hate to think that the newbies here think that that is a viable way of hunting on a regular basis

glad someone is doing this testing tho

If someone came up with a load and choke combination that did consistently kill coyotes at 70 yards, using the same combination it would be easy to consistently miss coyotes at 30 yards because the pattern would be so small.

I disagree. Plenty of guns will shoot patterns at 50 or even 60 yards that are deadly on yotes with 4buck. If somebody would make a plated lead 3.5 inch load of 4buck they'd be even better. Number 5's turkey loads with a turkey choke will work at 40 yards when you center the pattern on the head or lungs.

You are right about this. I have watched guys (me included) miss turkeys at 20 yard because their patterns are so tight. Good point Derby. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I don't know if there is anything magical about the 70 yard mark. But 50 yards DRT sure would me nice, and I think it is more than doable. It just seems like through the years I get a lot of coyotes that come around the 50 yard mark and hold up, too far for the traditional shot gun loads and close enough for extra spooky behavior from the coyote. At that range they often will not let you have much time for a good rifle shot.

Anyway, thanks for the great input! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

3.5 12ga bb lead by estate are pretty deadly out to 50 to 60 yds with a standard full remington choke.

I've never seen them loads before you got a link. Thanks

i bought a case of them a while back up at great guns in kearny missouri, and haven't seen them in there since then but the gal that owns the place said if i wanted more she could probly get more. i think that there made buy remington,
