Photo Test & E-Caller Project

I hope that this works, I’ve been using Moment of Fame (photo hosting) for a long time, it is free and easy to use.

The photo is of the transmitter and sound source for my electronic caller project. Back in the late 60’s I had a lot of fun making callers up for the other members of my CVCA chapter out of flee-market “4 Track” car stereos and motorcycle batteries. Things have changed a lot over the years and I thought I’d put together a “modern” version of my homemade caller. I have tested the transmitter to the receiver out to 100 yards and it works perfect, I think that it should be good out to about 200-250 or so. The RCA digital voice recorder works real well, I can load sounds from my tape player, CD, computer, and directly for my own mouth blown calls. Quality of sound and volume are much more than good enough for varmint calling.

In case this doesn’t work here is a link to the photo: http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l13495.jpg

The 7-watt amp that I am using has more than enough power for good volume and is free of noise and distortion up to full volume. This is a photo of the 7-watt amp together with the box I’ll use to put it in for protection.

The Nady receiver uses 12 vdc as does the 7-watt amp so I can power both units with one 12 volt, 5 amp-hour rechargeable gel cell, here is a photo of these units.

I’m still torn between using the 8-watt or the 25-watt Radio Shack speaker, the 8-watt sounds better but the 25-watt seems to produce more volume, here is a photo.

Finally, I am going to put everything into a Pelican case, that is totally watertight and mounting the speaker on to the top opposite the gel cell to balance out the unit.

I will post photos of the completed project in a week or so, till then… good hunting!

Hey Marcos, slick unit you have there! So you set up the caller at 220 yds.which makes a 1/4 mi.round trip for drop off and pick up.You're gonna have some stout legs there, hehehe.
I tested my RS unit today, got called in with a 911 page from the wife (ol' Hide)locking here keys in her car.The range was at least 100 yds.I used my rangefinder to test, but g-squirrels are a major distraction for me.
We need to hook up for fox and b-cat season this fall or try the coons here in the valley.
Really cool set up,that amp looks like the one!Next time you shoot something call out my name!

You are absolutely right, that is why I don’t understand why some people want the remote to work out at long distances. I cannot see setting up any farther than 25 to 50 yards. Personally I would use the e-caller mostly in the daylight as I would rather use hand calls at night when I want the varmint’s attention directed at the light and me. In daytime I don’t want the critter looking at me I would rather have it looking at the caller and a decoy.

Where do you go hunting down there in the Valley? I used to go bird hunting and frog gigging down there years ago, haven’t been in over 15 years though. I went calling out toward the AZ border one time and called in a ton of protected Kit Fox, they would come in and bark at me couldn’t get rid of them. I also shot quite a few Bobcat and Coyotes up on top by Jacumba, east of the highway.

There are a few guys posting to this board from San Diego and Imperial Valley, we should get together and go shooting sometime, I’d like that. Let me know if you are interested.

Good hunting,

Marcos

Hey Marcos, there are a few g-fox out here yet.I've seen thier tracks and spotted one at night off Imler rd.(that's where Huff rd, heads east)but mostly I go up around Jacumba and McCain Valley for fox.Quiet a few coyotes around the gravel pit in Shell Canyon off S2 west of Ocotillo.I got a buddy that wants to try varmint hunting but he's not "Heathen" enough to handle the summer heat and the exersion.Anybody out there from San Diego or Imperial counties?Good idea Marcos!

Remshot, I like it a lot. I'm on about my 5th generation trying to find something I can offer in kind of a commercial "kit". Couple of differences. I also use the 7w amp - not smart enough to build my own got it at dckits. $10. I'm using an fm transmitter so my receiver is a Sony dial fm radio. The transmiter drifts a little so the older receiver will track the signal a little. Earphone jack out to amp and then direct to speaker. I am using a rs battery holder so 8 AA batteries. Everything uses the same size battery AA.

All this fits into or bolts onto a parts container - tackle box - that I got at Home Depot for $5. Box is 8x12x2 mas o menos.

I like the GE unit you use; however, I got RIO 600s on a deal at Circuit City for $49. For a transmiter a fm transmiter powered by a 9volt rs battery holder. I mounted it all in a shallow wall box. I could have just used a 9 volt battery but wanted all the sizes the same. Took the resister crossing the mic out of the transmiter and it is really clear. I had to solder parts on the boards, but ended up less than $100 with the mp3 player.

Boy have I got sounds now. Make most of the stuff you get on tape just junk. This has become a lot of fun. I'm thinking about taking an add here to see if I can sell these and most particularly the sounds. I'm getting really good at that. Have one of an antelope kid that brings them in with their knife and fork out.

Nice work Remshot.

Well, just as I posted I noticed that it was Marcos (Elalto) who posted the photos. I was giving wrong credit. Nice work Marcos.

hello Elalto, It amazing this it what I have been trying to put together for awhile now. Can I ask you some specific questions ?? Hopefully your experience will help me get my unit working. Feel free to contact me directly at tfl9175@blackfoot.net should you choose.
1. Who sells the already made up double male end cable from the RCA recorder to the transmitter???
2.Did you decide on the 8 watt or 25 watt speaker???
3. I like the concept ralphL talked about using the 8 AA batteries how is their life compared to 12volt lead acid battery. Are they lighter in weight?? and less expensive???
4.What size project box did you use for your amplifier??
5. On your amplifier which is exactly the same as mine did you soder on two female input phone jack connections and a bridge wire. Can you explain that more in detail cause that is where my problen is??????????
5. Are you using 8mb or what size memory cards??? I would like to install about 30 minutes sound with hopefully several selections on each card. Different cards for different species.
6. How are you installing your calls onto the cards???????

Thank for your expertise I do appreciate the assistance

Hi David,

I will try to answer your questions, and hope it helps you out.

1. Who sells the already made up double male end cable from the RCA recorder to the transmitter???

I bought mine at Radio Shack, BUT I tried several things until I found that a STEREO-to-STEREO cable works the best! Don’t ask me why but it does, try it!

2.Did you decide on the 8 watt or 25 watt speaker???

I’m still working on this, I like the quality of the sound of the 8-watt but I also like the volume of the 25-watt. If the 8-watt works well in the field, I will probably use it.

3. I like the concept Ralph L talked about using the 8 AA batteries how is their life compared to 12volt lead acid battery. Are they lighter in weight?? and less expensive???

The reason I went with the gel-cell is that it gives me 5ah of current, the 8 AA will give me a maximum of 1.2ah to 1.4ah therefore it should last up to five times as long. The gel-cell is very easy to recharge, will last almost forever and is not too heavy in my opinion. I bought my gel-cell at a flea market for $5.00.

4.What size project box did you use for your amplifier??

It is 2 ¼” wide by 3 3/8” long by 1 ½” high, I will be mounting the jacks and volume control through the end of the box.

5. On your amplifier, which is exactly, the same as mine did you solder on two female input phone jack connections and a bridge wire. Can you explain that more in detail cause that is where my problem is??????????

Yes, the bridge wire is for the ground connection on the “WIN” jack, the “WIN” jack is the one I use for best results. Make sure that the tip of your cable is connected to the input pin and not the ground pin; there are two input pins and only one ground pin both of the jacks’ ground connect to the same ground pin.

6. Are you using 8mb or what size memory cards??? I would like to install about 30 minutes sound with hopefully several selections on each card. Different cards for different species.

I am using two 8Mb cards right now but I will probably end up using only one.

7. How are you installing your calls onto the cards???????

I have found that I get the best sound by playing the tape or CD on a good player and placing the recorder in front of it, the recording is done using the built in microphone. Other methods seem to put too much hiss & noise on the recording. My own mouth calls also sound real good this way.

Good luck, let me know how you make out: elalto@cox.net
