Photon xt

Hey guys a buddy of mine is looking to buy a photon as well. He has a question i cant answer. Will the photon hold up to a .308 he wants to mount it to his ar.....thanks in advance for any insight i can gather....

I have no experience as you probably see from my previous post your responded to. But with all the searching I've done today I see several shooting them on 458 socom.

Bill, yes, the Photon will hold up to a 308. I have my 6.5x mounted on a Bergara .308 and have been sighting and testing it. It works fine.

I phoned the company before using the .308, inquiring about the caliber rating. I was informed up to .308 and so I mounted the scope and have shot it several times with no issues.

This is to be my new hog hunting outfit. Hope to try it out next spring.

Nice set up. How do you like the 6x for hunting? I'm torn between the 2 choices

Yotehunter,

My aging eyes like the 6.5x scope better at my 60 yard coyote bait site than I did the 4.6x. The gray fox was not taken at the bait site, but was out in the field at maybe 35 yards.

Field of view is less with the 6.5x as you would imagine. I guess if you are calling coyotes in close then the 4.6x might serve you better, but if 75 to 100 yard shots might be the norm, then I would go with the 6.5x.

Here are some tests I did with the earlier model 4.6x Photon. I didn't like the focus / clarity of the scope, but the new ones are better with the hole in the center of the lens cover, which regulates the amount of light entering. This video will give you an idea of field of view of the 4.6x at least.

I was able to shoot a coyote at 150 yards with the Photon 4.6x recently. I was not using the on board IR light. I have a separate IR light that I use and was able to clearly see the target at that range. I didn't break the bank either when purchasing the IR light it was around $60 on amazon.
