Pickup bed gun cases for calling?

One thing I dislike while calling is putting the rifle into the cab of my truck. I always have my 2 sons with me in the back seat so my rifles always end up either next to me on my seat were it is uncomfortable or in the passenger's seat where they get bumped around and are just not secure. I have a truck box I've tried but it is noisy to open and close. I don't like the idea of roof top racks because you can't put a rifle in them without pointing the muzzle at your buddy's head.

I was thinking of a way to make a quiet to open case that would mount on the side rails of the bed within easy reach that would protect my rifles and keep them outside the cab.

How do you guys deal with your rifles between stands?

Any ideas?

I drive a 01 GMC Sierra SLT with bucket seats, and a center console. I stick my rifle between the seat and console. Stays put very well, and is easy to get. I put muzzle on the floor.

Other then that, my back seat fold up, and I strap them to the bottom of the back seat.

I don't have it anymore, because someone with more money than sense came along...

But at one time I had a side rail toolbox (bought it at a farm supply store) that was insulated and lined with canvas. It would hold two firearms side by side securely. I paid $200 for the toolbox, and another $200 getting it lined.

I like to make my own stuff...

I have a tool box that i mounted a rack too but it is loud like you said. i would look into the side box like stated or something like a box in the bed with a large drawer that contains your rifles and gear..

When it's not raining or snowing (sometimes even if it is), I use one of our drag bags. It has a divider in it so you can put two rifles in one case or a rifle and your shotgun. They're relatively cheap and padded well enough.

For the guy with the funds, I saw a new box at SHOT made by American Classics called the Field Armory. It was an aluminum diamond plate box with rifle storage and a slide-out drawer in the bottom. They haven't hit the market yet but something to watch for. Pretty sweet but may be too noisy for you as well.

Also, I hunted with a new friend last weekend who had the Outdoorsman's Package on his Dodge. The side rail compartment with gun/rod storage was sweet and pretty darned quiet. All you need is a new truck for that but, hey, what's a few bucks among friends?!

Hey Dawger, check out riflecaddy.com or prophet river.com. simple idea, but looks very handy. I contacted them about being a distributor, waiting for a reply. Like the old beer commercial "so you can carry six beers with one hand?"....."brilliant!!"

The console on my truck runs from between the seats, all the way to the dash board.

My rear seat folds up just like that though, and the bottom of that is where I strap my rifles, and keep the ammo in the door compartment of the back door.

Not sure of make/model of your vehicle, but here's another possibility.

The rack below has worked out well in my Wrangler (in which space is extremely limited...not many empty spaces long enough for a 26" barreled firearm.) Picture below shows the only mounting possibility due to overhead and fore-aft room). Ad below shows mounting in full size pickup.

Here's how it mounted in the jeep. Two guns rest securely in cradles which can be "pinched" a bit to fit forend if desired), and have never bounced out even in some pretty rough rides.

Never have to sweep partners as rifle is inserted butt first, muzzle over shoulder, then swings toward center of vehicle to drop forend into front cradle. Reverse procedure to remove firearm.

Velcro straps were provided in event rack to be mounted vertically, but I never use them.

In this case and given what you are saying are your limitations, i would recommend a Pelican case, and then mount it to the top of your truck box. It's water and air tight.

This is my inside rack, no fooling around, no bumping, no damage.
Not the best picture as I was showing how the NV fits w/the riser I attached.
My regular rigs sit on the blue pad.

Du-Ha makes great pickup boxes ---
Under rear seat AND one in bed ---
Use the big one on flatbed farm truck
Might look at these----
Thx
