Pics of My Ghillie Suit..........

I looked into making a ghillie suit for deer hunting (before i ever got into predator hunting) and now that ive gotten into hunting coyote i though it would be perfect!

Heres how i did it,
I decided i would do some research and make one rather then buying a kit or something like that,

So i searched everywhere and printed out hundreds of pages of info and pics....the i started collecting the materials here is what i used:

-An old pair of military coveralls
-1" square netting
-Shoe Goop (for gluing net on)
-Jute (this is the same thing as Burlap except its not threaded into fabric)
-many colors of Rit dye
-other fabrics that would help blend the look
-a hat that has a brim all the way around
-And LOTS OF TIME!

I started this project during my summer vacation i am just 15 so i had plenty of time

I started out by gluing/sewing the net on the coveralls and hat

then i cut the Jute into about 18" segments and dyied it with the rit dye (in 5 gallon buckets)

Let it soak in there for a while (about 24 hours) the it took about 3-4 days for the jute to dry

now it was time to get to work!

I started grabbing about 5 strands at a time and threading it through the netting every inch and tying it half way (so there was 9" on each side)

I did this over, and over and over adding in various other fabrics

And i got this...........

In this pic you can see how I made the hat:

Tell me what you think, all in all it probly cost me $75 and a heck of alot of time

I havent got a chance to use it yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif but i will soon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif and ill let you guys know how it goes……

PS-those of you who use Ghillie Suits how do you carry them into your stand? Do you where it to the stand? Id be kinda afraid some Dumb A** would think im Big Foot or something and shoot me….With some of the things I’ve seen people do over here I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened

Well, you should be right proud of yourself. That is one fine looking ghillie suit. Really came out nice.

I carry mine to my stand by the way, and then put it on. I just roll it up and stuff it in the pack.

So tell me where did you get the jute to make it?

That first pic makes the face mask look really dark, it actually blends in pretty well

Nick: Gotta say, when I was reading about your suit, I thought I was reading my own story of how I made mine. Same materials and method!. First time I used it, my buddy and I called in a double. He had on his suit too. We sat on a shaded pature hillside on a late afternoon. The dogs never even saw us. Suits worked great. NOW! the negative. The thing I didn't like about it is that it SHEDS terrible. I had strings everywhere all the time. And the jute really catches stickers and weeds bad. Wore it one season. Bit the bullet and bought a suit from Cabela's. One made out of strips of material instead of burlap. Gotta say it's a great improvement. Hey, I'm not trying to sound like a downer here, but I did get tired of picking strings out of my mouth, and vacuuming the pickup and house all the time after wearing it. But anyway, good job on it...looks great. And it will work great too! Greg

I can't really tell what kind of job you did....cause I can't see it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You've done an excellent job. Let us know how you like it in the field. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Looks great! I want one too... How much for you to make one for a 2X kinda guy or I want the exacts on how you did it. I can't believe how much it hides you compared to the regular camo. As far as the negative it does look black in the one pic but not in the next. I love it! Fine Job Fine Job! 15?

I dont want to make & sell them simply because there is so much time involved /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif sorry

But i could definatly give you some specifics, First i would do a search for Making Ghillie Suits there is a TON of info on this on the internet and like i said above i just gathered it all, printed it out and read......

If you have any questions just give me an email at [url=mailto:nickmyron@hotmail.com

How did you attach the net to the jacket?

I used dental floss to sew on the net and then used the shoe goo over the knot so the knot wouldnt come untied.

A lot of hard work. You should be proud of it! Most kids your age are spending their time with television and play station. Your parents got you going in the right direction.

I use a ghillie suit every time I got out and do not believe I have ever been seen. Mine is a lighter color then yours but I am here in NM and the surroundings are lighter. I wear all but the face mask and hat on the way in. I also use so really cheap camo gloves I bought from Walmart.

I thought your face mask was a little dark too. But the main thing is to cut your silhouete (sp?)
Out here I am always trying to sit in the shade as well.

Happy Hunting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Great job Nick.
I just finished mine that I bought as a kit from one of the advertisers in VHA.It cost about $65 and is suppose to take a little over six hours.Well it took me a little longer but it looks just like yours except it has a hood on it.You can order different colors in one pound amounts of the jute.
The only problem I see is there is a smell kinda like an oil/petroleum.The manufacturer states that it's a natural jute smell.I'm not sure if it's from the die or ?
I'll test it out in the next day or two.

Take care,
mike
