Planning a hunt to East Kansas

A hunting buddy and I are considering a hunting trip to East Kansas. He’s been going to NE Kansas turkey hunting for the last few years and we are planning a predator hunting trip sometime after Christmas. It’s my understanding from him that there is a lot of public hunting land. Can anyone give me some advice on where to and not to go? I would like the opportunity to do some hunting in open terrain since I have very little opportunity to do so where I live. I’ve had very little luck in getting them to commit to come out in the open here. I suppose that’s due to so much cover to stay in during the day. Therefore I’ve concentrated most all of my calling in the woods and thickets because I have a lot more luck. I’ve never been hunting there so any advice that can be offered will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Actually, there is very, very little public land to hunt in Kansas. Your buddy was most likely referring to our Walk-in Hunting Access (WIHA) program. It's private land, but the hunting rights are bought up by our state government so that anyone with a valid hunting license can hunt there. Here's a link to a map showing all land enrolled in the program this year. Please read all rules, and respect them, so that the property owners continue to enroll in the program 😁.

Most of the WIHA is from the central to western parts of the state. There aren't any coyotes here anyway. LOL

If I was going to travel to a different state to do some calling on public ground, I would look into other places besides Kansas. The public land gets hammered, and there isn't a whole lot of it. If you have time to go around and knock on some doors, I bet you could get a couple spots to do some calling.

Thanks guys
Like I said I have never been there. I’ve read on here about some people going there to hunt but maybe it’s not the right choice if I’m planning to travel some where to hunt or maybe it’s like around here and most folks don’t welcome folks coming from out of the area to hunt deer and turkey. I’ve never had the opportunity to call in the more open terrain. Hopefully some time I’ll get that opportunity. However from the info you all have shared i suppose I should look in other areas. Thanks again. I’m open to suggestions. What about western OK?

Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico have copious amounts of BLM that some has probably never seen a man made foot print. If I were to travel somewhere and hunt public ground it would be to one of these states.

There is plenty of WIHA to hunt, more in central and western Kansas. Good tracts of public too. Lots of excellent opportunities to coyote hunt on WIHA as well. I'd check out the Smoky Hills area of north central Kansas as Well, lots of vast tracts of WIHA in excellent coyote country. That said, there's tons of coyotes all across the state. Knock on doors, and you'll have no trouble getting permission on some excellent calling ground. Good luck! Kansas always needs more dead coyotes.

I hunt in the NW part of the state and don't call on the WIHA at all... if you cant get permission on private ground good luck. most WIHA coyotes have been there done that and lived to tell about it.
