Plott Hounds

Anyone have any experience with Plott Hounds? Their is a litter here and I am thinking of getting one as my hunting buddy but I was wondering what to expect. Thanks for any info in advance.

Different bloodlines will have diff traits.I hunt with a guy who has Plotts.Lots of drive,no quit, and dam sure fight a bear or lion.Just one line I am familiar with.I have seen a few hounds raised as pets that turned out to be great "buddy dogs" and will hunt, but not range to far and come back to check in very often. To get this you need luck,a willing hound and lots of freedom to take the dog with you every time you leave the house.Only having one dog also helps to make the dog bond to you and not try to be part of a pack. Some hounds will get this, but others have so much "GO" they don't care about you, just running a track and getting to a tree. There are some other breeds that are more suited to be hunting buddies than a plott. What kind of hunting do you want this dog to do?

I started trapping last year and I wanted to start doing some coon hunting. I ended up getting a female plott. She is 7 weeks old. I just like having a dog with me when I head into the woods. I plan on taking it with me to check my traps this winter.

If you pack her along alot and make sure she is having fun you will be in good shape.Don't let her get to a live animal in a trap until she is at least 6 months old.If she gets whipped it could wreck her.Other wise taking hounds on a trap line is a good way to let them see and smell what they are suposed to hunt.Good luck ,I'll help any way I can.

I have friends that have plotts and walkers. Another buddy has a cross of plott/walker. His oldest dog was a bear dog with a cold nose. If mike struck he knew is was in for a good run.

I have had experience with a couple of Plott hounds; although they weren't bear/cat dogs. I was raised with 'coonhunting hounds. We generally ran B&Ts or Walkers, a bluetick now and again. The Plotts that I ran would fight anything on earth; including the other hounds running with them, including at the tree/kill. They had a particular dislike for anything feline.
I'm sure that my experience with two of them is in no way a sample representation. They didn't have the nose of a Walker or a black dog.

Check the background on the dogs! There are several lines of Plotts out there some are good some are bad and many are just hounds! I have been hunting with Plotts for 3 years now. I love them. It also depends on what you want to run. Coons most any line of Plotts will work. Cats are a little different story, you will need an excellent locator when you get one treed. Coyotes I have no experience with. Bear you will need a solid bay dog one that is not at 15 or more feet from the bear. They just do not tree really easy when the dogs are that far away. I try to answer any of your questions!

I have been packing her up and pretty much taking her everywhere with me. I took her squirrel hunting for the first time 2 weeks ago. She satyed by me for the most part. I have a buddy at work with some coon hounds and he said that I could go with him to let her learn from his older dogs. We dont have any cats or bears in Illinois, at least I hope not, because I would probably shat myself if she treed one.
