Mission accomplished! I had 2 goals for this trip and both have been met and it’s only Sunday, lol.
We roosted a bird in Montana Friday evening and my son shot him at 0624 Saturday morning mere seconds after his feet touched the deck.
I attempted a bird Saturday but ran into either other turkey hunters but mostly bear hunters. I had an A and B plan and plan A didn’t work so we resorted to plan B and that’s where my son killed. Couldn’t believe it but that was the ONLY bird we heard. I decided late yesterday evening we’d head back to Washington.
We slept in this morning and had a great breakfast and decided to go ahead and get our 3 day Idaho license. The first spot we hit we walked up on a bird. Had one fly from one ridge to our ridge but then decided he didn’t like what we were offering and shut up. We had another bird answer from a mile away and we decided to head somewhere else.
The next spot I’d hunted in ‘22 and encountered birds. We pulled up at the gate and as we were donning vest and guns, some lady comes out of nowhere and takes off on an E-bike the same trail we were gonna walk. Not gonna lie, it put a damper on our excitement, but we figured the turkeys should be used to the traffic.
We’d walked maybe a mile when we struck birds. We set up and it was a slam dunk setup, except the turkeys didn’t read the script. Don’t know how close they came because I’d slipped back to attempt to call them up and past my son. Needless to say it didn’t work.
We decided since they didn’t spook and just moved off we’d reposition about 100yds closer. We got set up and they hit the first call. It was a stand off for a little bit and again they didn’t quite follow the script. My son was set up to the left with me set up to his right and doing the calling. Instead of the birds coming straight up, they circled to the right.
We knew there were 3 gobblers and a jake. We figured the jake would be the lead bird and he was. My brother was videoing and I was like shoot the bird, shoot the bird, when the first gobbler stepped out. The plan or hope was after he shot the others would jump on the downed bird and I’d get a shot. Didn’t work out that way, but the fact he got his birds have made my trip!!
