Poll of Best one gun Coyote round?

I know this has been raised a few times but a quick poll may clarify this for a poor newbie like myself...

If you had only one AR for coyote hunting what round would you use? I would assume the 223 but a lot of you seem to like the 6.5 and others.

Greatly Appreciated!

204 with 40 grain pills does them in faster than any 223 I have been around personally. Just my opinion. If I had the money I would get a 224 ar from the 6mmar website (6.5 Grendel necked down to shoot 22 cal bullets looks like the closest thing to a 22-250 in an ar-15 platform I have seen.

Gary,

I think he wants the pelt. My 6.8 doesn't offer that
option on most hits.

The 90 gr. Sierra
gives new meaning to exit hole. It also makes a mess
on quartering towards shoulder shots or neck shots.

If saving fur is the goal, I would also recommend the
204 Ruger with some experimentation on bullets. The
39 gr. Sierra would be where I start.

I don't save fur. I want to dispatch coyotes with extreme
prejudice, and our northern coyotes are big. The 6.8 SPC in
an AR-15 platform shines in this application, and can
absolutely tear up a coyote family group.

My sister-in-law freaked out a bit when she heard me go
through most of a 10 round mag on a coyote pack one evening.
My brother knew what happened.

If I would have been
using a 204 Ruger upper, with the intention of saving pelts
I would have been skinning a while. I just want to save
fawns and turkeys. A 6.8 SPC is perfect for me.

.223, simply because I have used this weapon system for the past 15 years in the USMC. 500 yard qualification on silhouette targets with open sights...the round has plenty of accuracy. Additionally it has plenty enough terminal velocity for varmits, coyote, etc...

As much as I love my .223's, my new go to round for coyotes is the .264lbc(6.5) they several i have shot dropped like a rock without a twitch and it didnt damage pelts.

Scott,

What bullet are you using? What distance were the hits
at and where on the coyotes? No exit hole, or little
exit hole? I have been thinking 264 LBC but more in terms
of an antelope gun, than a fur friendly predator round.

I use the lapua 108gr scenar. I had little exit wounds on all 5 dogs i shot with it. closest was 40yards furthest was 218 at the worlds this year. Most hits were right behind the shoulder, but the 218 dog was hit in the neck(he was running fast)and all went in and small exit hole. I think it would put an antelope down quick.

I could run my ballistic program for you to see what the energy is between 6.5 vs 243 vs 308.

.338 Lapua Magnum. I don't call very well, and this will get me the ones that wont come to a call. I'm going to put a green laser and a night vision scope on it too.

Appreciate all of the Responses!

Would it be fair to assume 223 is fine for most shooters 100-200 yds while the 6.5 may be better for longer ranges? I know some of you can shoot LR with a 223 but it seems like that may be something I would work up to.

Scott, would love to see the ballistics you mentioned.

Another vote for the 223 Remington.
The ammo is widely available at many different types of stores. (walmart, gas stations, etc.)
And the bullet selection is very good too in factory ammo.
V-Max, soft points, hollow points, partitions, triple shocks, etc.
Everybody makes ammo for the 223.

Here is the ballistics i got out of my program(patagonia)

DISCLAIMER: by no means this a fair assessment, i picked these calibers and bullet weights by what i use.

223 77gr SMK @2900fps with 100yd zero
Dist energy drop in inches
100yd 1184 0
200yd 972 2.7
300yd 787 12.2

6.5G 108gr Scenars @ 2600fps with 100yd zero
Dist Energy Drop in inches
100yd 1426 0
200yd 1250 3.8
300yd 1091 14.4

243 75gr amax @ 3300fps with 100yd zero
Dist Energy Drop in inches
100yd 1487 0
200yd 1208 1.9
300yd 970 8.6

Again, this is stuff I use. Not meant to compare calibers.

MTC,
As far as an AR round, put me down for the .223 Hornady Superformance Varmint round. It is a great factory round that will shoot almost as good as a reload. The 53 gr. V-max puts down the Coyote's and a good center mass shot keeps fur damage to a minimum. This is my first season with a .223 and I find myself grabbing the AR more and more over my .243 and 22-250. Still most of my kills this year have come from Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote out of my 1187. It seams this year the coyotes are coming in hard to the call/decoy set up and offer the shotgun shot more than a rifle shot. Just lucky I guess and now that I said that the closest one from hear on out will be the 200 yard variety.

Dang CBASS....you got something that don't just kill em'...it will also skin it for u as well. Not hating, if u want to make em explode...make em explode. The .338 Lapua is an amazing round & currently the World Record holder for longest recorded Sniper kill. Made by a British sniper in Afghanistan. 2nd place belongs to the 50BMG & I thing GySgt Carlos Hathcock (USMC) is now in 3rd with the .50BMG out of the M2 Browning Machine Gun that he placed a scope on. He and a few others used it in Vietnam & that's what brought about the use of .50BMG rounds becoming a dedicated sniper round as well.
