Porcupine Hunting

First off....let me tell you the back story. As we are a large group of hunters here instead of other forums where it is a large group of shooters. Big difference.

I had a deer hunting video on YouTube that got some negative reviews (as to be expected in a public forum) but when all my defenses of hunting were combated with inaccurate, negative, untrue and unrelated responses by an individual...and then numerous threats on my life and that of my family from others came...I made the comment that I would hunt and record a non-game animal if they didn't stop the hypocrisy.
(i was getting suggestions from a scottish girl, like this: have the state limit the speed from Oct - Dec to 20 mph on all roads where deer live, so you dont need to hunt and control the population, hence limiting the deer related car accidents) (and that fishers and pythons (yes pythons) were natural predators of porcupines in western south dakota) silly kids

all the craziness continued and I went through with my promise. A cousin owns a HUGE chunk of land in western south dakota and has put thousands of dollars into tree groves to prevent wind erosion of farm land. We decided that the perfect animal to hunt would be one, of many, porcupines that have torn up some recently planted groves.

I put the comments and warnings in the video and posted it proudly. I have since gotten plenty of negative press about it from both sides so i thought i'd get your point of view. Anti-Hunters call me a sadist that just kills everything i see, and hunters or (non-anti-hunters) say posting videos of hunts or killing an animal because someone offended me is wrong. (id agree it probably is, but the fact remains that childish "threats" dont offend me, but even online, a threat on the life of a person or their family is not ok

I dont care if you're upset that i "killed an innocent animal for no reason" because there was a reason...and i take no joy in hunting a porcupine that cant get away. it isnt fun and it isnt a challenge. However, i did get my point across and the person it was directed at no longer believes that hunting is animal abuse.

The hunt was not illegal, the video is not in violation of YouTubes rules, and even after having no less than 4 threads started on various other forums, they continue to try and FLAG it to have it removed and me banned from YouTube.

SO, on to the video.

lets year your pov

Cbass I can't see the video but porcupines need controlled to...

They can and do damage crops and property. Not to mention the AR peoples pets....

I know I can usually get permission to trap by using porcupine/skunk/raccoon in my talks with farmers/ranchers.

I know a kid (7yrs old) that uses a bat to take porkies because the buyer doesn't like blood on the quills/guard hairs.

is it giving you an error? saying its flagged? saying its inappropriate for some viewers? i signed out and tried to watch it again and it worked. anyway...

we've had dogs with a muzzle full of quills before.
we've had thousands of dollhairs ($) worth of trees get shredded before
we've seen the majestic eagle lay dead with a body cavity full of quills.

all in all, some people just dont know when to close their mouth and open their eyes. this all started because there are people in this world that would rather wish ill will on humans than see an animal die. these are the same people that chastise us for eating meat from a slaughter house...and then feed their pet cat with "high quality cat food" that is really just scraps from the same slaughter house. hypocritical children

life and death seem to only be understood by those that witness it first hand. no hunter takes joy in death, but we all understand that eating meat is a choice and a right. if you arent willing to kill for your food, you shouldnt be allowed to eat meat, and if you've never been on a hunt, you dont deserve to discus the topic of hunting. hunting doesn't revolve around a successful harvest and no hunter would stand for animal abuse or cruelty.

Cbass, i have no problem with you hunting whatever you want but the video just feeds the antis with more fuel to the fire. I don't like people making a mockery of killing animals because it shows a lack of character. I'm as big of hunter as any one on here and i would of just swept their childish comments and threats under the rug. You are just stooping to their level and i hate to see any respectable person do that. Good luck on future hunts.

hey, your comments and opinion are appreciated. the difference with "us" here is that we can have an intelligent conversation about hunting based on facts and logic rather than opinion and emotion.

I had plenty of "hunters" come to the video and make ridiculous violent remarks to the anti hunters that threatened me.

for example...this guy claims to be a hunter who "has my back"
i deleted him ASAP for being a dipshit that wasnt helping the cause. you dont fight threats from people, with threats AT people.

Quote:Notice how *** guzzlin gutter **** cherry here failed to mention how she was wrong about everything and failed to answer any questions!! LOL!!

Just another owned **** anti!! LOL!!

Oh and cumguzzlercherry, I have a wildlife biology degree, so **** on that one!! Wonder who knows about animals?? Go **** yourself!!

Hey, when they gave you your *** change (tiny man to woman) did they give you your tiny **** so that you could **** yourself with yourself?? YOU SICK ****!! LOL!!

that sort of nonsense by a "hunter" doesnt fly and I blocked him and the person he was talking to.

I know this isn't the approach most hunters would take...but it is a choice i am willing to stand behind. the anti-hunters that have responded to this video are doing themselves far more harm because 75% of them are responding with hateful or violent remarks. which i save...and use against them in the future. i have a cute little anti violence song that will be up shortly.

btw. lots of them keep saying.."nice shot, you cant even shoot strait" or "first rule of hunting is know where your bullet is going to land"
every shot hit that tough bastard and i kept shooting so that he wouldnt suffer, gut shot is a terrible way to die, and even though it might have seemed funny to shoot it 3 more times on the ground...i did it to make sure it was dead good and quick.
this series of three shots in the air were in a westerly direction in which the next 5 miles are private grass land and the next 15-20 after that are open empty prairie. safety was not an issue and i had land owner permission.

cbass, I think you made the right decision on taking off that guys post. There is no place in public for a post like that. Hat's off to you for doing the right thing with that post. I also understand your commitment to a belief that you are so passionate about. You seem like a very smart and reasonable person and I hope you won't allow yourself to be too caught up in the madness. I think the internet is a great tool to learn, communicate and showcase talents but it can also be very desructive.

I want to shoot a porkapine... Pardon my spelling haha.

They eat up the trees around here pretty bad but I can never find them.

What kind of pistol is that?

it belongs to my cousin, but i am fairly certain it is a Ruger Mark II, that he covered in Flat Dark Earth Duracoat.

we dont really "hunt" them per say. but when we find the damage and stumble across the culprit...we persuade them to stop with extreme prejudice. usually it is from 200-400m with the .308. it does a better job of knocking them out of the tree.

It's certainly a unique way to do battle with those goof balls. But in the long run I doubt it will change anybodies point of view on hunting. Those ding dongs are as passionate about their anti-hunting beliefs as we are about our pro-hunting beliefs.

Keep up the good fight.

Go out in the snow, find an area where they've been stripping trees and look for the trail they made going tree-to-tree. They don't move very far in deep snow, and they'll be up in one of the trees with a fresh trail to it.

Get some.

They are a real problem with livestock. I have had a two horses with a nose full of quills. I have seen the same with cows. Guess the horse was curious and ran up to sniff it. Big error and it can be fatal for horses as well as dogs if not treated quickly. I shoot them on sight now. I never use to bother them but after the horses and a few dog incidents I show no mercy if they are around livestock or residences.
