porting a shotgun barrel

I am thinking about porting my Mossberg 835 12 gauge because my wife uses it alot when she hunts with me. With its synthetic stock it jumps and kicks pretty good. Does porting help that much? A company called Magnaport has a different system of burning the holes instead of drilling holes. Is one better than the other?

i actually live 5 miles from magnaport, they did my trap gun and it did help for me, [beeep] i had mine drilled so im not sure on the burning option

I had a nonported and ported 835, in my opinion they both kick the same (hard).

I agree with GC, no way on a hunting shotgun. Ported shotguns are MUCH LOUDER than shotguns that are not ported.

I have a Browning Ultra XS Sporting Clays O/U that is ported that I shoot Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays with and it is ported.

If I ever do buy another shotgun to shoot clay targets with it will not have ported barrels.

Have you checked on having the barrel back bored? I've seen some expensive trap guns that were back bored to reduce recoil. It must work or they would not be having it done to $5000+ shotguns.

Just buy a Benelli if you can. Because of the type of inertial action and recoil spring that it uses, I have yet to pick up another brand/operating style of shotgun that's easier on the shoulder than my trusty M1S90. That's shooting everything from 3" magnum slugs to 00 buck to #4 buckshot loads.

I second that on the 835, and mine is ported. It is louder! Especially when you pull the trigger on a 3 1/2 mag #5 turkey shot. It doesnt just rattle your teeth it curls your toes to!!!

Heres the facts on shotgun barrel modifications:

1. Porting will greatly reduce muzzle jump and what the shooter feels on his or her face. Some porting patterns seem to work better than others. My personal favorite is Angle Porting.

2. Lengthened forcing cones will give you the most value for the dollar in reducing felt recoil. Backboring a barrel does not have a marked benefit on recoil.

If you want to make a gun feel the best it can...get it ported and lengthen the forcing cones.

As far as "burning" the porting into the barrels. What most places do now, including Angle Porting, is use Electrical Discharge Machining which leaves no burrs on the inside of the barrel like drilling does.

Oh yah, I know all this because I used to ba a master class sporting clays shooter and fired 30,000 twelve gauge shells a year. So I have a lot of experience in what shotguns kick like!

Do what I did to my 835.... Take off the factory recoil pad and throw it away. Go to Wally World, buy a cheap soft slip-on pad and install it.
It made a world of difference on mine. The soft slip-on pad really absorbs the recoil of heavy loads.

I have a 835 ultra mag that is ported and it seems to make a little difference, i does make it very loud my hunting buddy's can tell that. I had thought about doing it to my super nova but with the recoil reducing stock it doesn't need it .

I think if I do do it I may buy another barrel that is ported for just a little more money than the porting then I will have 2 barrels. Still trying to figure out what I am going to do. Another thing I thought of is I only have a 20" barrel on it now so a 26" would be nice.

usually people say the other way with that system. i know my uncle SBE II is awsome to shoot with birds shots(never shot his with mag loads) according to him it kicks liek a freaking horse with 3 1/2 turkey loads compared to his 11-87. but the SBE is lighter then the 11-87.

On the recoil pads does one size fit all shotguns? I'll gp to Walmart and get one but do I need to take measurements of my existing one?

i know they have "universal" ones that just slip over, but as far as an actual replacement one i believe you order gun specific

I bought the slip on Limbsaver from Walmart as advised above and it really looks like it will work. Thanks everyone for the help.
