Portland City limits Coyotes Some Questions.

So I have someone interested in purchasing some pictures of Urban Coyotes this person understands I have had luck getting coyotes to come in pretty closed to the city my goal is I want to try and call some Coyotes in inside the city limits of Portland. I know I can do it in Tigard, Clackamas, and Oregon city I have called them in at all them places. But in PDX proper it is a little different. I will not be shooting them no guns involved only Camera. So no problems but now where to start calling a few places I have been thinking is Washington park and Hoyt arboretum / Forest park also maybe up in north Portland near smith lake.

So onto my Question how long do you think it will take for the cops to be called if I use a screaming cottontail call in Washington Park? And really could the cops stop me any legal issue (harassing wildlife stuff) Also any other areas inside PDX where someone might be able to call a coyote into the camera. Yes it is going to kill me to call one in and not be able to shoot it lol but I really have been thinking about this and it could be a cool deal. Thanks for your help rp

((((ohh for people not in Portland well This town is full of tree huggers and Hilary fans. so I dont think people will be happy with me harasing the coyotes)))

Maybe we should take bets on how long till the cops are called on me lol rp

The screaming cottontail sound will probably set off all the dogs within hearing distance. I'd use a coaxer. The police may bust you for disturbing the peace or disorderly conduct. Heck, in that town they may even arrest you for being a Republican on a sunny day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Maybe the sound of crinkling paper while eating an Egg McMuffin. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
We have them around here and they will stop for distress when I see them first but rarely come closer. They will answer howls too. But take the dog out and the coyotes will follow us right to the door. And pet cats or chickens they will come day and night. One was showing up at the grade school at lunch time daily til the game dept caught it.
They just are a bit different here in town than out on the ridge.
I have been thinking of luring one to the house for a pic too. Good Luck

It is a certainty that if you use any distress sounds within earshot of any humans you are going to attract some unwanted attention. Depending on how close they are, I'd say it would be pretty fast. Maybe not cops but curious do-gooders at the very least. And of course pets. There probably are some areas you could do it without any problems though.

Good luck

Let me take this one a little farther for safety sack. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

In my opinion a couple of my rabbit distress, sound more like a baby crying/screaming to my ears at a distance.

With that being said, who else will think the same thing when or if they call 911. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Ya gotta known that not every person calling 911 is rational, or accurate in their reporting.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Or worse case, the hero citizen who grabs his gun to investigate strange sounds... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The reality of all that is the police dispatcher will be the one that sets the tone when he/she puts the call out to the other unknowing officers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Situations can turn dangerous or embrassing at the bare minumum, when you have the ordinary citizen calling to report what they believe is a child screaming or a suspicious person.

Just a few to many WHAT IF's in this scenario... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So between the domestic animals, unknowining citizens, cops coming to the crying baby sounds, I don't think I'd even bother unless I was say far enough away from all that to be safe. Safe for yourself, and others. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

You have no idea how many times what was reported to the police in NO WAY was accurate information. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I just wouldn't do anything within the city limits of a city like Portland, that could cause me any grief whatsoever. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You might get some negative reactions to a funny noise like a scream or baby crying or another distress sound thats misheard, OR even have a sighting of some wierdo dressed in camo running around in the woods.

I think I would go to the local PD dept. and have a talk with them. Explain that your a wildlife photographer, even print up a few cards on your computer to "prove" your a photographer and see what they say about it. I think if your upfront and let them know your a nature lover trying to capture pictures with no intent on harming them, you may get a free pass on doing it.

Shooter, nothing wrong with that, assuming everyone else get's the word of what your doing, and that's the problem, is if the right hand doesn't tell the left hand what's going on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I live in Carlton but was an OSP engineer for Verizon. My travels took me all over their territory. Over near the REI store and Bridgeport Village there are a ton of coyotes. Mostly around the river and the railroad tracks. They come into the local neighborhoods at night and eat food out of the dog and cat dishes as well as the dogs and cats. I saw one a while back over in Sherwood happily trotting down the road near the YMCA with a dead cat in it's mouth. I would imagine things aren't much different in Portland proper since there are so many wooded areas.

What I would do is first contact the PPD and explain in detail what is is you intend to do and where you intend to do it. I'd explain that the pics are going to be used in an article on urban coyotes. That's been a hot topic here in the Northwest as you probably already know. Since it's Portland you may need some kind of permit but I doubt it. In the actual calling process I'd be more apt to use kitten sounds or coaxer sounds and at a low volume. I doubt that you'd be bringing them in from any great distance. I don't think I'd be using howling sounds as some whacko might think you're werewolf and come after you with silver bullets. lol

Over in the Forest Grove city limits, to the amazement of my wife, I've called in coyotes just by lip squeaking. Although there are lots of coyotes locally here in the Carlton area I've only shot one but I have called in dozens of them just for the fun of it. Too many hippie farmers and city transplants (liberals, tree huggers, antis) and houses that are just too close together to be safe.

For the people that do not know the Portland area Forest park and Washington park are so big they had a homeless man and his daughter that lived in a makeshift cabin there for like three years and no one knew they were there. Now I understand the concern but part of the thing is the person wants the pictures writing on the urban coyote problem Portland is having. Cats and small dogs getting killed and neighborhoods in the Washington park getting over run with Yotes. As for legal problems There is no law in Portland that I can find that states I can not use calls to bring the animals in. As for the Cops in the area I bet many would love to do it with me haha. As for Mr citizen going home and getting his gun or someone with a conceal carry in the area coming to do me harm. In this city if they have carry or own a gun then they are not the ones I am worried about it is the tree huggers that will attack me with there sandals and fake fur coats haha wish me luck and stay tuned it should be interesting and as for someone calling 911 well that I hope never happens but if they do I hope it is a tree hugger cause I would love to see the look on there face when I show them all I am doing is enjoying the wildlife that we are surrounded in rp

pk1 thanks for the info. I do plan on getting a hold of the ppd before I go out and for still photography you do not have to have a permit in the urban green spaces now film is another game all together thanks again rp

Quite a few years ago a guy and I were way out in the country night calling. It started to rain so we pulled over and were drinking coffee waiting it out when a sheriff's car pulled up behind us and approached us with his hand on his gun. He went to the driver's window and asked us what we were about. We told him and when he saw the two bobcats we had in the back he relaxed. He said some woman had heard us calling and called in to say that a woman was being raped. She could hear the screaming.

The cops probably don't care if you do the calling but may get upset if the phone starts ringing and they have to drop their Krispy Kremes to go see what it's about.

I hunt an 1100 acre property in the center of Frisco, Texas. There are a lot of apartments, housing, businesses, and major roads all around that area. I'm sure the sounds of the e-caller and my shotgun can be heard for a pretty good distance. I normally call the Frisco police department and inform them that I will be out on that property before going. I've discussed this with them and they are aware that they may be getting a few calls for strange sounds and gun shots. They informed me that an officer may show up in the area but once he knows exactly where the shots were fired then he will probably just leave. It is legal to hunt there and they won't stop me by their own admission. I just take the precautions before hand and so far it has worked out fine for me.

why don't you just bait them in with a happy meal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif if there is no guns what or yo going to do if one of Washington or Oregon's big yellow cats may have a snack attack for mickey d's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Forest Park is so big that I don't think anyone will notice. I would actually try around the Columbia River Slough or the Bybee lake area.

Republican is a crime in this town, regardless of the weather.

Not all hunting is by calling, simply take the time to slowly go over the areas that you think your yotes will appear at first, be there at the time they should be there.

While you can't bait in oregon, you can go to places that the yotes will show up at, at night, fast food places on the edge of town, etc.

Most predators will follow a routine in checking their territory no matter if it's in the city or country. Since you will be shooting probably at night with a bright strobe, it would be a very good idea to touch bases with the local beat cop so you don't scare him when that strobe light goes off, and you get your butt shot. blue

When I was a cop up in Washington State, we had people calling in about coyote running down the alleys with princess the little white yappy poodle in his mouth. So the Chief had me bring in a .22 Rim Fire and I got to hunt every morning while on duty for about 2 weeks until I got him. I saw him almost every day but had to wait for just the right shot so I wouldn't put a round threw someones house plus I wanted a head shot. Well I got him and the little fluffies of the world were once again safe. And my hunting coyotes on duty ended as well, darn it! LOL
