possibly my new Ohio deer rifle

Since Ohio is finally allowing the use of Pistol Caliber Rifles for hunting deer it may be time to put the Encore 209x50 away, so I though I would have a tryout of sorts from some of the guns in my safe that will qualify, also its a good excuse to shoot some guns that haven't been out of the safe in some time.
The first one out is a Marlin 1895 CB 45/70 with a Leupold VXR 1.5-4,
I know it felt odd shooting a levergun with a scope but I wanted to try this combination, so far I think it will work out very good I only tried one load the 325gr FTX that I loaded over some IMR4198

3 shots 50yrd

3 shots 75yrd (I wrote 100yrds on the target but it was from the 75yrd line)

I think the term "Pistol" was used in error. More often than not the actual verbage or intent of the restriction is "Straight walled" cartridge.

Chupa

Well technically it was considered straight walled cartridges like chupa said. For past couple years its been you can use pistols with a barrel longer than 6", and calibers larger than .357 in only straight wall cartridges. I have always wondered why no one could use a lever gun in 44 or 357 if you can use it in a wheel gun. They just recently changed it.

The only thing im wondering is how they are going to moderate shell capacity. For shot guns your only allowed 3 rounds, id assume the same would be true for rifles. I just don't know how.

The people making these laws seem to give no thought to inforcement.

In Indiana it doesn't have to be straight wall, but it has to be 35 cal. or larger and the case must be at least 1.16" and no longer than 1.8". It has led to about 20 different versions of custom chamberings being created.

So I guess the game wardens need to carry a pair of dial calipers with them now.

I am taking my .44 mag lever gun...I havent deer hunted much for years,, but the new law may only last one year.

What gets me is the 50-90..50-110???Really?....also the lacking of the .50 beowolf,.458 socom and the .450 bushmaster rounds,,,, cant have evil looking black rifles roaming the Ohio hilllsides.

Well played ODNR,, well played.

Rich, Thanks I'll keep it in mind.

I think I have taken more game with my 45/70 than any other rifle I own. None of those critters got out of sight and hardly any meat was ruined. You might want to give 300 grain Barnes Originals a try if you are going to handload for it.
