possum popping

does anyone shoot oppossum? i love to go out to the public hunting areas around my house (mid michigan) and shoot possum with my bow. a lot of hunters take does and just take the backstraps and leave the carcass laying around. oppossum will hole up near them and go out to feed on them about every hour. i use a saunders blunt tip and aim for the head. they pretty much shatter the skull. it makes for good target practice in the off season. sometimes it seems too easy though. you can sneak, walk, or run up to them at 10 or so yards and let fly. i usually step back to about 30 or 35 just make it a little more challenging. but it's fun and there are plenty of them.

Kind of like armadillos here in FL, but you gotta hit them from behind to penetrate reliably with archery gear. They're active all day too.

A few years back I put a hurt on the possum population at camp. Used the Marlin 22wmr & 34gr supremes. They are nest raiders, therefore they must die. They can also climb trees well. Slower creatures no doubt, when one of those steven king evil eyed things looks at me the hair on my neck goes up, it's almost a nautious feeling. Almost like looking at a picture of Cher.

I like only killing the animals I'm going to use. I don't know about your state but in this state you can lose your right to hunt by not taking the whole deer, and I don't beleave with as many people out their without food who would use the deer meat it seems a shame to just leave carcass laying about. I kill possums for their hides and know several people who eat possum so I give them the cleaned and dressed carcass. Don't eat myself but use most game that I take..At least I use the hides or feathers of the game I kill. Possums are a fur type animal and comes under fur bearing animal regulations of most states if not all that possums live in. Their is a leagle season to take possums and you know the fines of your state for taking game out of season better than I would. Befour going out and just shooting possums be sure your not breaking the law. Would hate to see you lose your right to hunt!!!

Glad you brought that up, Billy Bob.
If you hadn't, I was going to.....

Once upon a time, I shot a 'possum at about 15 feet with a .357 Mag stuffed with Glasers. It only took one shot. As advertised, the round didn't exit. And it didn't need to.

possum go out at all times of the day. you can even call them in using a bird distress call. possum, red squirrel, skunk and woodchuck and a few more animals are legal to hunt all yr round in mi. small game license and yer good to go. hill william bob it's a pest control thing for me they, like danurve said are nest raiders. if i wasn't so frightened and disgusted by them i would skin them and use the fur.

Hello,

A season for opossum? Are we talking about the same rat-tailed, carcass-eating, diseased-vermin; that I have around here?

And people are wanting this critter to eat?

I will not let my 160 pound, farm dog, Great Dane eat that nasty critter(and he's killed plenty of opossum).

My first kill ever was a 'possum. I must have been about 4 or 5 years old. That's when my Dad gave me my first .22. I still use that gun today..its the ole' Ruger 10/22. I have orderd a 'hellfire' trigger system for it..thinking about it, I orderd that thing like 2 months ago and still havent got it..hmm..anyway, here it is: http://www.sksman.com/access/ruger10_22b.html It doesnt look like much to install, but will be fun to play with when it comes to hutin' rabbits.

HEY BONUS YOUR DOG PROBABLY WOULDN'T EAT THAT POSSUM IF YOU WANTED HIM TO. MY LABRADOR MIX LOVES TO STALK AND KILL POSSUMS. GRABS THEM RIGHT BEHIND THE HEAD AND GIVES THEM A DEATH SHAKE. IF HE CATCHES THEM IN THE OPEN HE WILL RUN PAST THEM AT FULL SPEED AND SEND THEM FLYING END OR END INTO THE AIR BEFORE DISPATCHING THEM. I FOLLWED HIM WITH THE 4 WHEELER THE OTHER DAY AND HE NEVER DROPPED BELOW 20 MILE PER HOUR FOR 3/4 OF A MILE. I HAVE CLOCKED HIM AT 35 MILE AN HOUR FOR 1/4 MILE SECTIONS. HE WILL JUMP ABOUT 5 FEET INTO THE AIR AND POUNCE ON MOUSE LIKE A CAT.

I beat them with golf clubs........run them over........shoot them whenever I see them.........sick my dogs on em and I leave em lay when I am done doing all of that. What do you sweethearts think about that???

Like I said the frist time, You had better know what and when you can hunt something. I have never eaten a possum but around here have no problem getting rid of the cleaned carcass. I know of several hunters in deer season last who paid fines for killing possums out of season. It doesn't matter weather you or I like them or not when the long arm of the law catches us doing something wrong, and in this state not knowing hunting Reg. is no excuse. You can lose your right to hunt, and you rifel, car/truck and any other gear you have for taking game out of season. You also lose that right in several other states who honers Missouri laws on hunting. Just becouse something is ugly dosn't mean theirs not a law protecting them. Know you state laws or do as you please untill you are cought.

Are you gentleman finding possum during the daylight hours?

Saw this one at about 8am 2 days ago at our Hutchins (Dallas) terminal. She walked through the parking lot, down the grass strip next to our main building and across the smoking area with several people in it. Didn't like me being close to her but didn't seem particularly afraid either. She went under the chain link fence behind her when someone's dog came over. This is in an industrial section of town just a few miles from downtown Dallas and about 200' from I-45.

I've seen coyotes on our yard a few times as well though only at night.

Unfortunately it's inside city limits so no firearms. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Possum carry EVM Equine Viral Meningitus (sp) which will kill horses. I have racoons runing all over the ranch, they are pests but we don't euthanize (liberal speak for Kill) them. The possum on the other hand are fair game to euthanize since they will kill the horses.

The only thing that will eat a possum is a buzzard and visa-versa.......I thought!! I now get $5 for a possum. An old man I met eats them.
