Powder for 357?

I am looking to start reloading my 357 so I can shoot a bit more over the next few years. I am loading for a desert eagle in 357. I am looking at H110, 296, and 4227. I am not trying to build hot loads just match factory ammo. From what I understand the desert eagle works better when the case is more then half full. I also would like the cleanest powder so not to foul the gas system. What do you think of the N110? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark, I loaded for a friend's Dessert Eagle. The Dessert Eagle is designed for heavy loads, and my friend's would not cycle on lighter target loads.

In his gun, I loaded two loads 18.0g of IMR 4227 with a 125g Sierra and 18.7g of H110 Using a Winchester Mag pistol primer. Both loads were very accurate and never jammed. The H110 did have quite a bit of muzzle flash.

Good luck, that is one heck of a cannon you have there!

You might also take a look at Accurate Arms No. 9. It's a little bit faster than H110, but easier to ignite and occupies less space in the case. I got very good accuracy with it in my Dan Wesson. It would put 5 shots in about 1" at 25 yards with a 2X scope, using 158 grain jacketed bullets.

The best powder I have loaded for my Desert Eagle is AA#9. I have used this powder in both a 357 and 44 mag. This powder shoots really clean and real consistant in my eagles.

WW296/H110 is excellent. So is #2400, I'm old school I thought someone might have mentioned that before now. Blue Dot is usable, though not one of my favorite powders for the .357. Good old Unique has some application in the medium hot loads too.

Thanks for the ideas. Is Unique a clean burning powder? I might have to rethink H110, I do not really want a lot of flash if I can.
I will look into AA#9, titegroup, 231 and 2400.
Do you think that AA#7 is to fast or will it work?
Thanks again

For 357 mag I use win 296(H110) & H Universal. The win 296 is only for max loads in my revolver. There are many powders I would try before I used H110 in your DE 357mag. I do use H Universal in other handgun loads like 38 & 40 S&W & it has been doing fine and is very clean. If there is data out there it would be worth considering.

IMR 4227 at 18.0g with the 125 and the Mag primer does not have any flash that I have ever seen, and I have shot a lot of jackrabbits with that load from my 6" revolver.

I would check your powder manuals for data on AA7. I have never used it, but I would expect that it wouldn't necessarily produce the fastest velocities with the heaviest bullets in the longer barrels.

I had no problems with using Unique with respect to it being clean burning or not. I found that AA5 metered more consistently through the powder measure (as it should since it is a fine ball powder while Unique is a flake powder) and that I got less barrel leading with AA5 than with Unique when using lead wadcutter bullets for shooting targets.

I noticed that my POI would climb as I shot the Unique loaded shells. I'd clean the lead out of the bore and the POI would go down. Using AA5, it got less leading and the POI didn't climb with successive shots. Had I been using a harder alloy bullet, or a gas checked bullet, it may not have been a problem with Unique. But, with my bullets it was a problem which using AA5 solved.
