Prairie dogs and gas prices

Just wondering if the very high gas prices are going to keep anybody from going west this year to shoot prairie dogs. We leave in 2 weeks.

It's certainly going to slow me down unless I have about three others to help offset the cost...

My Suburban gets about 17mpg on the highway and filling a 32gal tank is daunting... Our local gas just went up to $3.24 and Gas Buddy is indicating some potentially higher prices in the West.. When you are not familiar with an area, you're stuck with what you can find.

I have a friend that runs a local "Stop & Rob" convenience store and he's not too hopeful of lower prices coming back during the summer.

My solution to higher gas prices is to stay longer when I get there. Spending $125 in gas for a two day trip is more painful than just staying 3 or 4 days for almost the same is gas money.

Evidently didn't stop me ....I just got back from a weekend of dog shootin. Cost me about $125 with gas leftover. Not as many dogs to shoot as I like but still a good weekend and many dead dogs.

We just got back from SD. Took 5 of us the camper and a trailer full of equipment. Spent about $650 in gas round trip. Had a fun time though. The few P-dogs left there are still shaking in the burrows wondering what went on.

It sucks....but I'm going anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

But don't any of you complain TOO hard, I've got a 1300 mile drive ONE WAY to get to South Dakota. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

But...what's a guy to do? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Either spend $600 for fuel and go away for a few days, have some fun, bond with the son, OR......hang around the house and tick-off the wife. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Was it really dry in SD or somewhat green? Two years ago it had been really wet and it was green and tall with a lot of dogs which were not very spooky. Last year it was drier than a popcorn fart. Not near as many dogs and they were scared to death. We are going no matter the cost of gas. We will just try not burn as much gas after we get there. Try to spend more time on each town. How much was gas in SD? I'm in Southeast Iowa and it's $3.45 and climbing.

Three of us went to Newcastle, Wyoming on April 11th in a Chevy truck, pulling a trailer with a John Deere Gator. We drove straight through from NE Iowa. We were loaded for bear, of course. We drove home on April 14th, after two full days of shooting. My third of the gas cost was approximately $200. The cheapest gas we found was $2.99 and the most expensive was $3.29. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. Gas prices won't keep me home, but they might make me stay longer next time.

Yeah, or get another D-tech upper with that amount of cash /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Gas prices definately are terrible and they are going to get worse. Were heading out Sunday the 27th for NE WY, about a nine hour trip from Iowa and I,m sure it will cost around $450 in gas round trip. (my truck gets 13 mpg) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifIf it was $2 gas it would cost 280.00, for a difference of about $170, divided by two is $85.00.
If you break it down like that it looks alot better, atleast to me.

I think I can still afford another Dtech /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Who said having fun was cheap?

We'll be heading out late June/July. Planning on staying from June 30th-July 6th. Doing some PD shooting and sight seeing. I'm expecting to pay around $650-$750 in gas for the trip. Divide that by 3 ppl and it's not too bad, but I sure wish gas was a lot cheaper.

We went last year to SD the first week of June and the gas killed us, we under estimated the cost greatly. This year we added 2 more people to our trip but we all backed out due to the high gas prices.

It is a ball cleaning up on the towns but the cost factor is not justifiyable. We all roll our own but that cost has risen as well.

One can hope next year will be better.

Gas prices in Rapid City, SD; TODAY, unleaded regular $3.25. And it always goes up when tourist season kicks off which is June 1st.

If you are planing on coming out; have plenty for gas, you will need it.

Last week I went from Denver up to northeastern WY shooting dogs. Between the trip and driving back and forth to camp each day, I spent over $200 in fuel. OUCH!

I may have to give up some of those expensive women I let hang around. My wife has been wanting me to do that for years.

"expensive women".....is there another kind ???

gas in KS last weekend was $3.45 I believe with no sign of coming down anytime soon.

I know what you are doing. You want me to give you some flippant, careless answer here that you can send to my wife. Then with me having two broken arms and a broken leg (among other unmentionable injuries) you figure I couldn't go shooting anymore this season and I would share my "spots" with you.

Not goin' there!

In all seriousness, you must remember that there is little about me that my wife of nearly 34 years likes anymore. That is understandable. I don't like me much either. Therefore shooting trips are always encouraged, as I will be gone!
