Prairie Dogs with a good ol' Spire Point bullet??

Anyone have any experience whacking PD's with regular old Hornady spire point bullets?? In my .223 they shoot great(1/2" ave.), and the price is right. No doubt they will kill them, but I've shot dogs before with match HP bullets that where too hard... They zipped right through the dogs without expanding and confirming a hit was difficult. No "whump" sound, no red mist, and lots of crawl offs. Can't have that, without the confirmation of a hit the fun diminishes in a hurry. So what do you say, Spire points?????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I have shot Hornady SX, and Sierra Blitz and they do VERY well - the regular soft points don't open very well on PD's.
They are too hard

Lost count of the PD's I've busted over the years with Hornady SX's from my 222 and 223's. Shot one of my tightest groups ever with that bullet from my 222 Shilen.

I'm with catshooter and Bob on this one. I use 55 sx exclusively and they are very terminal on pasture poodles. Ten days ago I bought several thousand rounds for under $8.00 a box from one of the major suppliers. That is less money than I could have bought the sp for.

Back in the 70's when I was station in South Dakota, they didn't have the bullet selection that they have today and I used 55 grain Hornady Spire Points exclusively in my M-788, 223!
They were the cheapest thing going and they were just as accurate as anything available! Still use them today!
The match hollow points have a heavy jacket and therefore perform like a FMJ, no expansion!

Thanks for the replies fellas. I tried some of the "Super Explosive Spire Points" and they shot just as well as the others. That should get the job done well.

I use 50 gr spire points out of my 223 on dogs.Lets face it the acrobatics aren't going to be the same as with some bigger rifles but the spire points do a good job.I buy them when the gun shows are in town. A dude there sells bulk spire bullets for 26.00 for 500,hard to beat that.
