I am hoping to get some insight from those that know around here. I have been out a few times without any success and I am wondering what I can do different to increase my success. I have a Foxpro Firestorm and a Mojo critter that I use. I am hunting over in eastern Oregon in the mountains with some wooded and some open lands.

Can anyone give me a rotation of calls or 2 that they use, including duration's and time on stand as a starting point? I'll take any advice, I need a first kill

There is alot more goes into setting up a calling stand, prior to ever blowing a sound. Everything you do up to that point, dictates your success. But, to be specific on what sounds have been working, I've had great success with 3-4 minutes of rabbit distress, followed by a minute or so of howling, then 6-7 minutes of coyote or pup distress. Example on your Foxpro: Adult Cottontail or Snowshoe Hare 2, followed by Yipping Coyotes or Coy Group Yip Howls, followed by Coy Pup Distress 3. Of the last 150 coyotes, 140 or so of them came running in on the pup distress.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Tony

You really never know what's going to work best. Things change constantly. I have had great luck calling for a minute or so and then being quiet for 2-3 minutes. Another time, I get the same great results by turning the call on and just letting it run. I USUALLY start out with the Lightning Jack sound at a #3 volume for about three minutes or so and then silence for another minute or two. Next, I'll repeat the sequence but at volume #4. The third set is at volume 5, fourth set at 4, fifth at 3. If nothing comes in by then, I move. That's just a rough guide. You just have to keep changing it up until something works. Over the years, the Lightning Jack has been my most consistent sound.

It may not be your calling sequence at all, especially given that you have a fine electronic call. I would strongly suggest you purchase Tony Tebbe's DVD "So You Want to be a Predator Caller". You can order it from his website or allpredatorcalls.com. It will save you YEARS on the learning curve.

Pendleton, Tony (Predator University) would not recommend his own videos but I will for him. His DVDs are chock full of predator hunting tips and strategies.....good for starters as well as veterans. Calling is but one of many skills required to consistenty bag predators. Kevin

get a close reed call, one you can just blow on, keep the wind in your face, and never give up, also helps to buddy up with someone who has some kills under there belt, you can learn tons of good info in the field, with another hunter.
good luck
there are more dogs in your area than you will ever get to.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

You CAN just go out and call, but that DVD will push you up the learning curve faster.

I thought I was educated in coyote calling until I bought Tony's DVD. The best money I've spent on predator calling. A good e-caller (Foxpro) and a couple of hand calls (TT's). The rest is up to you.

Hey Tony, of those 140 coyotes that came into the pup distress, how long did you make that sound? A couple mins? Let it run until they show?

Maybe I should just buy the DVD!!!!

Tony nailed it (as usual).... I find most folks blow the stand before they ever blow the call.

Can't say as I've had a ton of success with one sound vs. another (though I do have the most confidence in pup distress.... no matter the time of year).

Most show up within a min or two of the pup distress playing, alot are within seconds. If I get a vocal response on the howling, you could almost bet your bottom dollar that they are going to come screaming in, when the distress starts. Of course, I'm talking strategy for this time of year. This is what has been working for me from Jan till now, as I am targetting territorial and paternal coyotes. My strategy is different in the fall. Not alot different, but different. It's as simple as figuring out what works during that time period and sticking with it.

Hope that helps.

Tony

Think some more about what TT just posted:

Those coyotes are right under your nose when you set up your stand under those circumstances. That's why it is so hard to not blow the stand before you even pick up your call.

Just like building a house, you start with the foundation.

....... ie. pick a stand, but one you can get into without blowing it! ...... location and approach

Best of luck ......... if it was easy .... everyone would be doing it and it would become BORING!!

I have called in a female on the last two stands I have made in the last two days, one a night before bed, LOL

both stands I used the calls TT suggested (thanks)on my P Alpha Dog set it up under my hunts, both produced during the coyote pup distress, using Night Vission and Elc call I like to set up down and across wind from the call about 75-100 yards, most of the coyotes I call in seem to come in from the down wind side or are attemping to get down wind, more so than during the day, maybe because of limited vission?
