Predator Chokes for my Maxus

You have to adjust the size of your pics to 640X640 pixels or less. Then host them somewhere on the internet and put the web address of the pic between img tags.

I'm not a picture posting kind off guy, sorry. I patterned with 'T', #4 buck, & some #6 'Hevi-shot for turkey hunting. I have not shot anything larger than the 4 buck through it. When I was looking I called Tru-lock & talked to I think the owner about choke selection for my Browning. I mentioned I was mostly looking to shoot #4 buck & T shot. He steered be to the .680, again for the larger 'back-bored' barrel. Of course I didn't test the endless mixes of choke & loads out there. I did measure off 45 yrds & test the pattern though. If I remember correctly I did have more yardage available with the T for predators. I share the choke between my Gold & BPS depending on what I'm after.

Muskrat30,

Did you save ur targets from your patterning test?

What type of Target did you use? Can you give me an idea of how many pellets you put in different size circles or vital organs? How did the Trulock choke compare to the picture i posted above with #4 buck? denser pattern? same? or worse?

I'd just like to get an idea of how the Trulock choke performed just in case my Rhino Choke tube turns out to be a dud.

Regards,

No, I do not have any targets or pictures from a few years ago when I tested. I used a 26" Gold 3" chamber, with the main load 'dead coyote' size "T", later I tested some Remington "HD", size 'T'. I've come to like the Rem HD better, more uniform, & round. I cut a few open.

I measured out 40(or more) yards & the pattern was much denser than the #4 buck pattern shown above, with more numerous T shot. The last coyote I shot with my shotgun was rather close, 12 yrds or less. I took a half second to aim & he took a pattern not much larger than a fist. He was stone dead. The shots come sparingly up this way. A few boxes of the high cost T shot can last a long time. I use a little #4 buck at times.

The Tru-lock has worked for me & also turkey hunting. Lots of workable combinations out there. It also isn't practical to have a choke for each load. I consider the range of the shot size most likely to be used. I won't pretend to be a choke expert but there are factors at play besides ultimate constriction, tightest not always being best. I did go just a hair tighter on the choke on my Benelli M2, which has a slightly tighter barrel inside diameter.

Many thanks Muskrat30,

I understand that constriction is not the be-all end-all when it comes to chokes.

But there is a correlation between shot size, constriction, pattern and distance...the solution to which i'm trying to converge on.

I don't want a gaggle of chokes as you point out, but rather a few "super chokes"...for instance One (1) choke for #4 through 000Buck aanother for F shot through BBB etc. I think that maybe that where the solution lies.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi TX Shooter, (or anyone else)
I was hoping,to tap into your findings relative to your maxus patterning capabilities/suggestions? I noticed that quit a bit of time has passed since your last post.
I have added a couple of areas to hunt coyotes in that are a little denser than normal and was hoping to bring along the Maxus.
Can you give me your suggestions/findings on what to start with relative to chokes/shot size.
I have the 28" Maxus, 3-1/2 Chamber.
I really appreciate your help and saving me the $/time I would be spending needlessly.
Thank you, Dave

I PM'd the following to Dave300 but i figured others may find my experience helpful.

Dave,
It's been a while since I've played with the Maxus, thanks to my new found fascination with 308ARs.
I was mainly trying my hardest to make 000 thru #1 buckshot work for me.
In the end, after spending tons of money on choke tubes and loads, I found that the factory investor plus full choke gave me the best performance with 3.5" double ought thru #4 buckshot. I wish I had patterned the factory tubes prior to ordering Rhino choke tube, which was a waste of money.
I think though that for hunting coyotes, #4 buck shot thru BB is where the optimal shot size lies. For these shot sizes, I highly recommend the kicks high flyer choke tube, specifically, their "Full" choke (actually a modified). The x-full (improved modified) works well also, but may be a touch too tight closer in.
I have gone clay shooting & dove hunting since, and I have to say that the Maxus throws very tight patterns at very close range with the Kicks high flyer "Mod" choke (actually improved cylinder). I find myself switching to the factory improved cylinder when shooting clays cause the patterns are too tight with the kicks choke.
My recommendation is to buy the kicks high flyer choke tubes. The downside to them is that they can't really be used effectively with the Federal flight control wads, the Hornady buckshot ammo with a flight controlish wad or the newer Winchester wad designs. These loads require the use of non ported chokes, So u may want to get the kicks chokes that are not ported.

The standard factory full should work good with 3" ooo winchester buckshot. I have killed many a deer in front of dogs with it out of a bps. Also gives good penetration.
