Predator hunting east Texas ?'s

I am new to the forum, and have not tried calling yet.
But before i do i would like to ask a few Questions.

I will be hunting in southeast Texas ( a little north of houston). I have only 350 acres of hardwood/pine mix land to hunt. I have shot 2 foxes one day while deer hunting. so i know there are a few of them around. But i am really interested in the coyote. Does anyone know the density of them around here. I will also be hunting alone most of the time.

1. what are the best calls for predators, (coyote, fox, Bobcots)
2.What time of day/night is best for calling.
3. what is the best gun to use. I currently have a single shot .308 with a nikon 3x9-40, an old nylon .22(no scope), and a couple different guage shotguns.
4. what are the best type of stand.
5. can you bait an area
6 is there a season for hunting them here in texas
7. what type of light do i need if hunting at night. I currently have a 12v rechargable that i used while coon hunting.

With that said, there's more than one way to skin a cat, or yote. Start w/ some rabbit distress & other "local" prey distress type calls. You'll probably be ok w/ a shotgun in thick cover. You could use the rifle you have now, but don't count on having a good pelt. Check out the video as mentioned, that will take you a long way. Serious about getting more land. Look around & see what you can find on the site about getting more places. Visit local farmers/ranchers/landowners & ask permission, you'll get a lot of good places if you put the time into it. As Crapshoot said "aquire more access". 350 acres is a good start but won't take long to either kill them are educate them on 350 acres.

You should have plenty of coyotes in your area.

To answer your other questions.

1. Most any distress calls will work. Pick up a couple of name brand calls and practice sounding like a rabbit in a world of hurt and you should do fine.

2. Predators will respond to call at any time, day or night. but my most productive times are dusk and dawn.

3. Either your 308 or 12 guage shotgun will do fine. If you choose to use the shotgun keep your shots close. I would recommend either 3" #4 buck or BB's for the load. If you can find them Hevi-Shot make a load especially for coyotes called "Dead Coyote", which is awsome.

4. I prefer to sit on the ground.

5. Yes, you can bait an area, but it's realy not nessassary when calling.

6. Texas has no closed season on coyotes and no bag limit.

7. I would suggest going to the night hunting section of this forum for advise on night hunting.

Calling can be a lot of fun, but also very frustrating. learning the habits of coyotes and setting up properly before calling will increase your odds dramatically. You have come to the best place on the net to learn the craft of calling. Dig in, use the search funtion to research particular topics and this will help a lot.
