Most of yall probably won't remember me(I wrote down all of the winner's names during the drawing), last year i stayed with Chet and plumbrich over on the Tennessee side and as long as I can get a day or two off work to make the drive up I will be there again this year.

Been Moderator about a week Bopeye. Now whether or not I done come up in the world is another story /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Off road vehicles are allowed only in one area. For the rest of the LBL they are a nono!Turkey bay off road vehicle recreation area is the only one they are allowed in and they must be trailered into there and out. And at that time of year it is likely to be closed because of soft ground conditions.

Sorry Dogduster, your stuck with sloggin' the hills with the rest of us. Let me know before hand and I can loan ya a walkin' stick to lean on while you catch your breath. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif I only stopped four or five times tops , today to catch mine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifJimmie

A few other items for those that have never been on LBL...

Our weather here in February can change in ten minutes. Dressing for winter can be a challenge. During our first year's hunt it was a balmy 5 degrees, snow on the ground and a brisk 20 mph plus wind. Last year it was almost right for a short sleeve shirt. Be prepared for rain and/or cold weather. Warm clothes, gloves, light rain suit or poncho, comfortable waterproof boots, heavy socks and a hat are recommended. I often get hot wearing heavy clothes when walking into a long stand, layering is the way to go. A light weight day pack is always handy. A map is another must have item along with a compass, roads are well marked but it is easy to get turned around in the thick timber. Due to topography and cell tower (repeater) locations GPS units and cell phone often do not work well on LBL. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Although Rangers are on patrol, back road traffic can be scarce. There are no gas stations on LBL, it is a non-commercial wilderness area. When you get off the beaten path you may go all day without seeing another soul. Therefore, get in trouble and you maybe on your own. I strongly suggest hunting with a partner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Are 4 wheel drive vehicles needed? Maintained (paved and gravel) roads are usually very passable by 2 wheel drive unless we get a heavy snow or ice storm. The LBL use map shows all marked (numbered) roads that allow motorized vehicle entry. In the field, roads have corresponding numbers posted at their entrances, intersections and crossroads. Last year, a few "remote area" roads in Tennessee were closed to foot traffic only. Be forewarned... we encountered a couple of field access roads that were so badly rutted that they should have been closed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
Not to fear, there are plenty of good places within a short distance of good roads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif I ran into two guys last year, on a main road, that were in the process of loading a large coyote they had just killed. They said they got out of the truck, walked 100 yards into a nearby field and started calling. The coyote was laying in the edge, apparently sleeping. Total time from leaving the truck till loading.... 20 minutes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'm sure Jimmie,Brent and other experienced LBL members may want to add to this...

Chet

Be sure your boots are good ones and well broke in. This ground is rough and steep.

As Chet mentioned cell phones and gps units are of limited use. Mostly due to the terrain features you will encounter. When you see some of the roads in here you will wonder how folks ever lived in there using horse and buggy!!

That LBL road map is the most valuable tool you will have. I have plenty in my kit but I do advise you getting one by snail mail and looking it over and becoming familiar with it. I will be checking a good number of fords and bridges to be sure those areas are accesible.

But Chet, I am going to save the easy access call sites for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Jimmie

Fords: little trickles of water flowing over the roads.Usually less than two inches deep. There might be one or two that are 3 inches deep /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Every once in a long while one gets washed out. This doesn't happen often but it do happen. Crooked creek ford was out for most of one summer a few years back. It's one of the biggest. Lots of rebar and concrete and she is as good as new and will be there a long time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif These are a lot cheaper than bridges or culverts ,and last longer when aplicable.

Natural springs are everywhere up there. Most of the streams are spring fed and flow year around. Hence the need for the fords where roads cross. Jimmie

I plan on coming. Is there camping their were the cabins are at? I would like to bring my camper. I just retired from the Army and moved to Springfield, TN from Yorktown, VA. I have been watching this board for a couple of years and am very excited to finally get to join the LBL hunt. See you all then.

Jimmie are you seeing any squirrels at LBL? I have been hunting at Cheatham WMA and have not seen a squirrel yet this year but I have seen a lot of coyote sign.

As Wayne put it, yes there will be plenty of campsites with camper hookup available. Not sure of the rates on them. You should be able to find that in the website posted for the LBL.

Driver,Squirrel sign isn't as abundant as in past years. Last years mast failure left things short for a lot of critters. This was state wide in both Tennessee and Ky.

Yah'll should be proud of me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I spent the weekend discussing things with the trapper that works the Ky portion. He made the statement today he is sure that between him and his partner along with all the other hunters in the area, there are at least two hundred coyotes taken from the LBL a year. He has noted no drop in numbers either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif He too has noted the signs of the population reaching saturation. He lost several in the traps last winter, they were torn to pieces. This gentlman makes his living studying and taking all manner of animals. He knows these critters far better than I do. Jimmie

Jimmie, I am brand new to the forum. I have hunted coyotes at LBL for about four years now. I did not know you guys were having a coyote get-together each year. I have hunted out of Wranglers camp for bow season hunting with my home crew from Corbin, Kentucky several times. Are there any slots left for the LBL Coyote Hunt now sponsered by PM? Is there a registration form to sign up on? How many folks do you anticipate to be at the Hunt? If cabins are filled up, is it OK to stay in a motel and still participate with you guys at Wranglers Camp? Redhound80

As far as I know at this time there are still cabins available. Any member is very welcome to join us in any way he can /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifWHether it be camping on the grounds or staying in one of the area motels.

We had thirty or so last year and I am expecting the same number or more this year.

Sign up sheets are not ready yet but should be soon. They are afraid folks may forget or need stirred up a little later to keep up interest /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I doubt this bunch needs any more stirring to get them ready to go /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

See you at sundown on the 3rd /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Jimmie

Thanks Jimmie! I'll start getting things lined up to join you all. It will be great to hunt and share the fire with folks who do not think I am odd because I love to hunt coyote! Redhound80
